Even sitcoms need a consistent universe. Seinfeld was about nothing, but the show still needed the backdrop of 90s New York for the humor and aimless stories to make any sense. 90s New York is a consistent setting that the audience understands and which provides a normalcy for the humor of the show to subvert. Post-Faust Equestria is just an empty receptical for whatever the creators and/or suits feel the need to toss in in order to present a given narrative. That undermines both drama and humor. Also, it ruins the immersion that had attracted the first fans.
