and maybe it's my own breed of autism, but I was never comfortable calling the princesses 'gods'
…. there is only one God, in this or any other universe….
Which isn't to say said god didn't grant two ponies the right, and ability, to manage and manipulate the sun, and the moon. But they're not gods, just alicorns.
Princess Cadence did come totally out of left field, as did Shining Armor. Neither was really needed for the tale they had to tell us about the land, or the lessons about friends, and about enemies.
I suspect if Cadence had been something other than an alicorn, even if she'd come with a nominal title of "princess", Twilicorn would never have happened. Maybe somebody at DHX has an ace up their sleeve to explain Flurry Heart (I happen to like the ideas proposed in "Flurry is not a true alicorn") but otherwise it seems like cheap grabs at our hearstrings. Or our wallets, trying to sell pony-sized celestia dolls mis-painted pink again.
I would have liked if they solved more of their problems without introducing new species for each new problem. And magic … it seems they've let magic do as it will, rather than holding it to the Equestrian equivalent of science -- outside the understanding of some, but always adhering to simple & immutable laws.
There were moments in the fandom's history that have been amazing, not all of them in season one. The fan-fiction, likewise, has been amazing and I'm so glad this particular universe has excited so many writers, in addition to artists. In particular, I like Fallout: Equestria (reading it, got me to buy the game. Seriously.) and while The Conversion Bureau has some problems, with a little creative license it can be used to ask questions about the human condition that won't get that answer any other way.
I liked Starlight better as a villain, but she's not bad as an adorkable replacement for Twilight-the-unicorn.
I'm done rambling now. Good night.
