In order to say that you are doing some thing you have to assume that there is a "you" and that the "you" in question is the individual entity that is doing that thing. Cogito ergo sum means that if I experience thought, I must truly exist and my existence cannot be illusory, because an illusion would still require a real subject to experience it.
