WE
ARE
BACK
After a nice little mid-season hiatus coupled with episode scheduling sheningans (thx Australia) We can finally start making these threads again properly. Also by the looks of things there will be no more Canadian-based fuckery like doubled up episodes. Hasbro's legal team hopefully took some Treehouse TV execs out back and shot them, so we should be smooth sailing into the second half of the season and the lead up to the movie in October.
So, before this all starts, who do you think wrote the best lesson? I'm a big fan of Applejack's "ah didn' lern shit" approach.
Special shout out to all the friends attending BronyCon this weekend. Looks like it'll be a blast.
Enjoy!

Rarity's "remember where you came from" lesson from Sweet and Elite stands out to me. It was definitely one of the deeper lessons. Fluttershy's letter from Putting Your Hoof Down was another good one. There was some actual personal growth in that one.

Well the tweet says welcome, newbie, implying that he's joined the staff once again. Maybe his books aren't panning out. Or maybe he just realized there's no getting off Mr. Bones' Wild Ride They did say Slice of Life was the last episode he wrote, so unless they lied and and some episodes stored in the Larson vault, he is returning. And I say welcome back. Maybe Twilight can get another set of wings.

So…
Was this episode just a "fuck you" to the adult fans?
All the stuff their fans said are fan theories and common opinions, from Unicorn Twilight Was Better to Fluttershy always learns the same fucking lesson, RD, AJ and pinkie being written off as one note characters because they are nonsensical hatred of rarity for no reason and so on.
They even had little girls come in at the end what where they thinking when they made those awful OC's anyway? to defend the show.
Also, a minor nitpick, but why would anyone who has read the journal they started in season 4 I think, prefer wingless twilight or even know about her?

It is not self-aware, just meta. It doesn't play with the absurdities of the universe the way that "Lesson Zero" does. It just serves as a vehicle for the author's rant. It is the show equivalent of the mouthpiece pictures that tumblrinas used to draw that had the characters denounce rape culture and the like.

>writers devote an entire episode to making excuses for their shitty writing
this was honestly the worst episode I can remember in a long time. I don't think I've ever ragequitted an episode of this show while watching it, but I was this close to doing so after that "Twilight was better without her wings" comment. I don't give a shit how good Larson's old episodes were, he deserves to be criticized for this. Maybe him being off the show for so long and his only exposure to pony shit being the fandom has ruined him. I don't know if they're actually taking him back on full-time or not, but I'd be worried if they did because I can't see how he could go back to his old quality if he thinks that this episode was in any way acceptable. I wouldn't be surprised if they brought him back just to do this episode and use him as a scapegoat for the inevitable backlash.

What this guy said, pretty much.
Having met and talked with Larson in person at Trotcon, I can say with first-hand experience that he's definitely changed for the worst. He was a lot more of a liberal-type sarcastic personality, got on my nerves honestly. All this episode is is petty strawmaning & excuses and I can perfectly picture Larson as behind the majority of it.

Honestly, I agree that both Fluttershit and Rarashit fags got fucked
However, I noticed that it was only Fluttershy that handled it all really well and even came swinging back compared to Rarity that just ran off screaming and crying and had to have Twilight handle it for her
Also, this episode sort of needed to happen?
Like, the show has really strayed away from friendship lessons
Then again, we are getting beautiful episodes like "Spice up your Life", "Parental Guidance", and "The Perfect Pear" that have amazing lessons/lesson undertones
And we just got the lesson that no one is perfect and I think they handled it pretty well while cracking a slew of jokes towards the fandom that really needs the lesson after all
I don't know about y'all but I enjoyed laughing at myself for a little

I don't know that it is going to happen. We seem to be out of energy for shitstorms. Remember the total non-response that Flury Heart got. All it got from fans were a few hate pics and some funny porn.
Like Flury Heart, this is an attempt at a manufactured shitstorm. It is like they are yanking on our chain desperately trying to get the old autism engine to turn over again, but it just keeps sputtering. What is anyone even going to get angry about? A "fuck you" from an old show creator? Yeah, fuck you too. Whatever.
Actual shitstorms happen when they take something that fans care about away from them--Woona, the whole princess mythology, Derpy, the format of the old show, a coherent narrative, etc. All this took from fans is one episode out of an otherwise good season. That is shitty, but next week we will have another episode that was presumably written by one of the new writers. It changes nothing.

So is this basically an episode of Larson saying
>yeah, we don't always write the characters perfect, that's intentional! They're not flawless mary sues y'know! Stop complaining!
Which is just a way for the writers to say brush away any criticism, of which something like 'Fluttershy keeps learning the same lesson' is valid. Forgive me if I'm wrong, but didn't Fluttershy finally get past that after most of the old writers left?
And preferring Unicorn Twilight is fair too because we all know the only reason she became an alicorn in the first place, and not everyone agrees with how the whole situation was handled post season 3.
Seems like the episode was just a way for Larson to bitch about being held to any kind of standard.
But the bigger problem is that the whole episode only exists because of meta fandom response, which is possibly the shittiest reason to write an episode. I say that as someone who loves Derpy, whose inclusion is solely due to fandom response. The episode Slice of Life was dumb and pandering and nothing but fandom response but it wasn't meant to be anything but dumb and fun. 'Fame and Misfortune' attempted to be both a legit episode and very clearly the writer venting his frustration with the fandom.
Good lord I bet the faggots at Equestria Daily watched it and now want to prostrate themselves before Larsons twitter as an act of forgiveness for being such a terrible fandom
If they even understood what the episode was really about at all
Admittedly despite all that, it was still fairly entertaining, the song was good, and I do actually agree with the songs point. Flawed characters are better than flawless ones; even if such a point is obvious to anyone with any sense about how to write a character.
Also, the two G3 fillies had terrible color schemes. Thanks G3.

>yeah, we don't always write the characters perfect, that's intentional! They're not flawless mary sues y'know! Stop complaining!
That's also not what people primarily complain about. Most of the complaints that I have seen are in regards to storytelling. When fans bitch about Fluttershy constantly relearning lessons or Twilight being a princess, the reason is not that the writers are not doing the characters justice but rather that those things are examples of poor storytelling. I think that Larson and company just never understood what the bitching was all about, although that may be at least in part to autists being unable to express themselves coherently.

This
Most of the complaints I see in the fandom are about the ponies acting out of character because the writer doesn't know how to write them, or that the writing is stereotypical and predictable.
That the characters aren't being "perfect enough" isn't really something I've heard anyone complain about.
One good thing about this episode, was the jokes. First time in a few episodes I actually enjoyed the jokes and character interaction.

This one was pretty interesting. I can't really think of any other show that managed to put out an episode which revolved around mocking their fans. I also feel like the vehicle they used to do it was a little strange and more than a bit of a straw man. Of course the reporter complaining about Twilight's "character" being weak was in the wrong, because criticizing a real person as if they're a fictional character is obviously retarded. That doesn't mean that all criticisms leveled towards fictional characters are invalid, though. The argument being made by the show ends up coming off as essentially the same one made by the anti-clop faggots who complain that drawing porn of their waifu somehow "demeans" her, even though she is a fictional character and, by definition, cannot be demeaned.
And that's really the heart of it, I think. It's perfectly valid to criticize the storytelling and characters on the show. They are fictional beings. They don't give a shit. However, >>294623 is correct in pointing out that most of the fans who bug the cast on twatter or attend conventions are probably not capable of coherently presenting these criticisms, and that a lot of the misunderstanding probably stems from there.
And so, this episode was born from the tragicomic collision of raging brony sperglords with the whiny liberal bitch writers who can't stand the thought of people not treating them like the special snowflakes they are. Just like any other trainwreck, this one should be tons of fun to watch.
Either that, or Hasbro actually does have a portal to Equestria in some basement somewhere, and this episode was the result of the ponies learning about their following on the internet.
As for the episode itself, it was pretty solid. The song was nice, and I did get a few cheap laughs out of the fandom jokes. I also enjoyed how they inverted the fandom's tendencies by making Applejack super popular while everyone hates Rarity. Glimglam added nothing to this episode, and people are right to argue that she should have been replaced by Spike, since he actually had a part in writing the journal. Overall, this is another one of those episodes where watching the fandom is going to be more entertaining than watching the episode itself.
