Business Item #4
Chan boards and chan-speak
There are a number of resources, none of which are readily available, on these topics. I'm going to try and distill down for you the basics of how Boards roll on the chans, and how Anons speak.
If you're already bewildered af, sorry. It is a different world, and yes, it's more primitive than twit/etc. It's also much more private and secure. It's also much more intellectually demanding.
That being said, I will tell you this - if you're questioning whether you can get the hang of this…don't. You can do it. If you're intelligent enough to be here, you should be able to figure it out in time. Be respectful and courteous to Anons when you speak up and we'll try not to rough-house you more than necessary to educate you.
Think of it as bootcamp for the digital soldier. As my father told me before I left to attend boot - "Millions of people, some better than you and some not, have all gone to bootcamp and made it through. If they can do it, you can, too."
Also, you don't have to particularly like the chan culture, in order to be involved. Likewise, you don't have to perpetuate what you find unseemly; just don't call others out if they do things you don't like, because you will provoke a harsh reply.
The chans truly ARE the digital Wild, Wild West. As you can tell, we're pretty solid in the insult department; we can dish it out and have heard just about all of it. We've had some sophisticated PsyOps run against us, and have not faltered or run away. We just get stronger.
Chan-speak is an essential element to understanding chan culture, so let's start there.
Bread - slang term for a "thread" (you should know this already.
Baker - Who makes Bread? A Baker (a thread maker). Bakers are important because they keep things rolling. Since a thread has a maximum limit of 751 posts, it is essential to have a Baker around who can make a new Bread. (It's not hard to do.)
If you bake it, they will crumb
Anons - this should be obvious. It's short for- what else? - "Anonymous," the generic name that appears in front of every post because the people posting followed the rules and left off their names, email addresses and subject info (we don't need a subject line, we can read what you're posting about).
Autists - Anons who are capable of doing high-level genius shit. Practically every Anon is an Autist at something.
Newfag - You. And there's nothing wrong with that as long as you lurk moar (read, learn and grow accustomed to how things work before you go jumping in the deep end).
Oldfag - Folks who've been around the chans for a long time (think multiple years' experience; some have been doing this for over a decade).
Checked (aka chek'd, Czech'd, etc) - acknowledgement of an accomplishment in the chanworld, especially a "Get"
Get - A "get" is the fortuitous (sometimes planned) posting that lands on unique post number, kind of like the point in time where you have to stop and take a picture when your car's odometer hits "111111". For some, it's considered almost mystical; for others, it's just cool. There's much to be said about a Get, but in simple terms, it's a thing.
>>>>>Significant digits include: Dubs, Trips, Quads, Quints, Palindromes, etc.
Digits (aka "Diggies") - Digits; a colloquial term for a "Get".
Lurk Moar (aka "Lurch Moar," "Brows Moar", etc) - Browse, read and observe; take the opportunity to learn from veterans and think carefully about the value to the community of any post you might wish to send, before you hit "reply".
Half-chan - 4chan
Infinitychan - 8chan, the predecessor of 8kun
Chan-speak also uses mis-spellings, odd phraseology, abbreviations and intentional linguistic twists of various types to communicate, like "l8r" (later), "tyb" (thank you, Baker), etc. Let's explore a few of those:
iirc = if I recall correctly
irdgaf = I really don't give a fk
idk = I don't know
fren = friend
phaggot = self-explanatory, huh?
reddit-tier = an insult, also self-explanatory
lurch moar = lurk more
This is just a small smattering of chan-speak. If you have a question about the meaning of something, ask. Someone might be kind enough to answer.
One final and big point here
You really need to learn LB/PB (last bread/past bread)
As I mentioned, you can link to posts from an earlier Bread…but when you do, and an Anon clicks on it…it takes them out of the Bread you in, and lands them in that Bread. It screws up flow and continuity of dialog.
So, the lesson here is, if you post a link from LB/PB, then make sure you indicate that
Like this:
>>1043675 LB/PB
Failure to do this will piss Anons off and you'll get yelled at, for good reason. Don't expect BO to care, either. You deserve the yelling.
