Though Western strategic military experts have noted: “The precise conditions under which Moscow would employ its nuclear weapons are ambiguous – by design”, it is well known that the Russian nuclear war doctrine relies on a “escalate to deescalate” strategy, which calls for a first use nuclear strike on an enemy to make them sober up before a full-scale nuclear strike occurs — the scenarios that permits the use of nuclear first strikes include Russia’s existence as a state is threatened, in cases of defense against attacks that use conventional weapons, and if an enemy lands on Russian territory — the latter two of which are most critical because strikes on Russia using Western weapons permits a first use nuclear strike, as well as NATO troops entering Ukraine that Russia has annexed into its territory.
