Good question. Probably the lack of moral and ethics in America today, but also censorship definitely takes it's toll on civilians. Another reason is economics. Back when the country had a lot more prosperity average people didn't have to work two or three jobs at a time with their wives working as well, so the stress on our modern society just to keep making a living and providing food on the table keeps people from engaging in politics due to time restraint. When you have to focus all your effort on survival and providing for your family while the economy is complete shit you have less time to sit around a campfire and talk politics.
