This is exactly what happened in Britain in the 1970s, all the biggest banks bought up smaller regional banks and consolidated wealth and power. Keep in mind Britain is a much smaller country and far less decentralized than the US is. If something like this happens in the US there will be a lot of chaos and public resentment. If distrust in banking institutions and government is high now, this will only get even more extreme.
