If it can't overcome the progress then it cedes but as Pollack outlines a good 75% of progress it overcomes and destroys the potential of so that humanity can never advance. And this isn't the 'progress of crackpots', it is well established respected science that this entity goes after and attempts to destroy. I don't understand the purpose of it and it seems completely batshit crazy.
I would have thought it was an institution but it is simply too wide spread, too personal and too invasive to be an institution. It has to be something else; some insane puppet master.

Even if the board is being shilled in one way or twenty that does surprisingly little to take away from that main draw, just adds to the fire.
In short, it is shitposting about news/politics/society. Only the apparent gravity of the topics separates it from other shitpost-dominant boards like /v/ and /tv/. Doesn't mean you can't have serious discussion there, or that there aren't hidden gems, but that's not why most people go there. If the topic is not entertaining enough it's just going to be archived quickly by collective indifference.

Though I will say that boards which are made with an original idea/intent/community are usually not subject to this nearly as much, even if niche. 420chan is a case as are/were the imageboards for different countries/languages (like Krautchan and successors).
I should also mention that though I don't browse 4chan's /pol/ anymore, I don't think there is a major difference in what they censor/tolerate relative to the political boards on 8kun. They both mainly stick to quickly removing content that comes close to or begs a violation of US law or is completely intolerable to clearnet hosting providers, and are inconsistent with the rest, usually per board. Previously 8chan was more stringent about sticking to only removing explicitly illegal content, but the tendency of it to remain up, and the difficulty of actually hosting several taboo topics in the open led to them having the rug pulled out under them, and a change in their standards.

I'd argue that with a few exceptions, any realized deeds/actions/movements attributed to "anonymous" has only had a loose correlation with anonymous posters on imageboards. The closest was probably Project Chanology with 4chan and split sites, and most of that was organized offsite in IRC, wikis, etc. Otherwise, it's usually just individual actions that get dumped to imageboards for some (false) degree of anonymity.
Fact of the matter is that the simultaneous public visibility of imageboards and the general avoidance of identification when consequences are involved leads to clandestine channels being the default mode of communication. If it weren't Discord, it would be something else.

Depends what you want in your discourse. /pol/ (and /pnd/) lets you get equal representation for doing the rhetorical equivalent of smashing someone's head into the pavement, which many love to do, but most other sites don't tolerate or passively filter out. After a lot of VPNs and Tor stopped working a lot of anons stopped bothering to post on 8kun. I was one of them for a while until I found another VPN that works. However I can agree with some anons, the place is often spammed or filled with idiotic threads which doesn't make it very attractive.

8chan board culture is to call everyone who disagrees with you a shill. If you combine that with robust shill-banning, it's going to organically evolve into a hugbox as long as the mods are drawn from 8chan culture. This organic tendency was sped up by the fact that Watkins bought 8chan expressly to use it for political influence. In 2016 this manifested as shilling Trump hard and banning anti-Trump posters; later on it moved into qoomerism and NatSoc accelerationism.
Lurkers don't see the board as a hugbox because they see posters openly advocating mass shootings and shouting niggerkikefaggottranny and conclude that the mods are always asleep. But a lot of active POSTERS would eventually say something that undermined National Socialism or questioned Trump's divinity and get b&. Now, sure, some of them will ban evade - but they're not going to put as much effort into quality posting after evading. Less thousand-word essays about how retarded mass shooters are, more "get a discord girlfriend" porn spam.
Now, a slow-ass board does have advantages. One of them is that good threads are still alive a month or three after being started.
Then you had the sloppy job. Finally Watkins SUCCEEDED in getting some dumb kid to commit a crime too big to paper over with a donation to the Pinoy Police Officer's Benevolent Fund. So he had to pull the whole board down while he found a new ISP, and there was enough incriminating content on the board that he couldn't just re-upload everything. So most of the content got nuked… and bye-bye, advantage of posting on a slow-ass board!

If you're an oldfag who doesn't have a pile of bans under his belt, that's a lot closer to true than you think. To avoid getting banned, you had to avoid offending whoever was in charge. For years, even when the rules diametrically changed. In the time of Trumpanzees you groomed the magamonkeys. In the time of swastikas you attributed your chronic wrist pain to weakness from not heiling enough. There are people who could go through the years without getting banned, but not that many. There's not much of a base of long-time users to keep content going.
IRL, the effect of mod contradictions wasn't "all posters any mod would allow are allowed" - it was "all posters ANY mod would ban are banned". It doesn't matter if the NT Tech slack was filled with a dozen violently opposed opinions on national socialism or pedophilia or trump, the experience for an active poster pretty reliably included "I said something that triggered a snowflake and now I am banned".

I did too. But I mostly tried to branch out into the 'real internet' and just cycle multiple accounts for bans because it is part of 'my mission from God'. Ban evasion isn't that much different than it is here. I don't really even make an attempt with the larger sites to 'sound different' because they have so many millions of users that they can't keep track of one 'raycis' out of the thousands. And usually they won't ban you for the first week until they realize that you are 'incurable'.
There are sites with content that is absolutely funny as hell (that I am keeping to myself) that IMO the majority of 8chan migrated over to…I mean it is pretty close to old times +plus some Russians (also funny as hell) but I would never mention them here, for obvious reasons because god knows that we don't need stupid fucking cunts like CFR affiliate Joan on them trying to police everything that is said and totally misinterpreting every shitpost and its history. Come to think of it she has probably eaten herself to death at this point but whatever fucking robot whale would sub in as 'Joan 2.0' needs to be kept as far from the fun as possible.
Thank God most people just moved over to discord or telegram.
