I'll lay out my case for slavery ruining Rome:
Rome became great under the Republic; the Empire merely held things together through a long slow decline. The map of their territorial gains confirms this, as does the air pollution in Antarctic ice cores which demonstrates that their economy peaked in the late Republic, and the Empire never matched it. It was legions of the republic's citizen-soldiers that conquered the world.

They had no life to go back to and no investment in the system. Naturally, decades of civil war followed, and the Republic and the Romans' ancient liberties died.
A nation's classes must support each other. The lower classes must obey the upper, but obligation is reciprocal: the upper must guide and care for the lower. When the upper classes import a horde of alien scabs and toss away the lower classes to save a few dinarii, they find that the lower classes no longer feel loyalty or an obligation to obey them. Then when the chips are down, they learn that their foreign slaves are much less interested in preserving their system, their traditions, their civilization, and their lives than their own people had been.
I couldn't give less of a damn about the poor negroes. Slavery is a betrayal of your own people, and it begets further betrayals.

Slavery is nothing but usury and debts. All slaves at pretty much all times were sold into slavery but could buy their freedom after a time. Which means slaves actually got paid for their work they do, they just couldn't stop working until they were done paying off their debts. If you have a debt today, you are forced to work, and are no different from the slaves of the past with a couple key differences: the slaves of the past were given free housing, were fed, and provided for by their masters. Whereas today you pretty much never get those things free and have to keep paying for those. Many slaves earned their freedom after a time, though some intentionally sold themselves back into slavery every time they became free, because they didn't want to stop working for their masters. There are many recorded cases of this in ancient times and up to the present. Slavery is not evil, but masters mistreating their slaves is evil. Many slave masters treated their slaves well because they got better productivity out of them, and they actually valued their slaves. They considered them assets worth keeping around, worth fighting over, and they loved them. In the King James Bible there are passages that talk about the duties of masters and slaves.
Given the facts of slavery where slaves often desired to remain slaves when given the chance to be set free it was not an "evil" institution but something many people actually preferred to live with. Obviously those slaves who had terrible masters would take their freedom first chance they got but that is like a person today who works for a shitty boss until they can find another opportunity elsewhere that they hope will prove to be better.

Our standard of living has been going down year over year for as long as I've been alive while our debt has been rapidly increasing. Everything is getting more expensive, which is rationalized as a means of population control. However, smart people's wealth is redistributed to unskilled dumb people for political reasons. Excess labor is also artificially introduced to make people poor at a faster rate.
Every single person who uses the US monetary system as it exists today is a slave. The power of the American military forces people to participate in the system externally and internally federal agents force people to participate. Try to buy and sell things with gold and you'll be put in jail.
Your unborn children will inherent the national debt enslavement and pay income taxes on that debt enslavement by force of the power of the state. Even if you don't agree with, for example, financing health care, housing, and food for illegal aliens.
Ever notice the strange symbols on those instruments of psychological control you think are money that you use to buy stuff?
