I think the biggest problem with it, is that apart from the C1, every single Corvette follows a distinctive, almost signature body contour. Even the C7, which I remember a lot of us criticized for looking too much like the Viper from the front, as opposed to this, which looks like a combo of the NSX and current-gen Ford GT. A long, swooping, almost ramp-like nose that leads up to the engine bay, a small cabin, and then a stumpy rear with a window that's slanted between the cabin and the rear bumper. The top outline on pic related is unmistakably Corvette.
This one, largely due to the layout, has necessitated a change to the design. The front is still long, though not as it used to be, and is now purely vestigial as it no longer holds an engine. The cabin is much larger, and flows into a similarly longer rear. The front and rear fascias are still classic Corvette styling, but I wish they'd switch the tail lights back with the Camaro's already but the bits holding those together don't even look like they're from the same company. Even the mid-engined Corvette prototypes from the '70s looked more recognizable than this one does.
Chevy definitely want this newest Vette to be a direct competitor to the latter, considering that when the first GT launched the Camaro was on hiatus and the Corvette was clearly being aimed more towards the Mustang crowd. Now they have competitors for both, but have sacrificed a lot of what made this car stick out in a crowd in the process. This one will still turn heads, but a glimpse of its body lines will no longer prompt one to know it's a Corvette on an instinctual level.
P.S. I find it funny that Jewgle Reverse Image Search thought second pic related was a "McLaren", because that's basically one of many things this car looks like rather than a 'Vette
