ab00dc No.14669

A thread to share experiences of cars you really should've walked away from.

Pic related is an EJ Civic I snatched up for 2000 dollarydoos. Pictures in the ad were real shitty, so all I could see was clean paint and a straight body. Texted the owner and he was very responsive and upfront with answers to my questions. He told me a few things were wrong with it of his own volition, leading me to believe he was being upfront and honest about everything, and it all seemed like shit I was comfortable fixing including bringing it back to stock ride height but come to find out there were a few rather glaring omissions.

>Clean paint was actually a half assed respray with cheap paint, now full of chips and scratches

>Busted turn signal stalk

>That nigger tier hyperflash mod, also making the front turn signals too dim to be seen when the parking lights are on

>Also nigger tier "rally style" rearview mirror, with no nighttime dimming; removed sun visors to install it

>Also also nigger tier fake carbon fiber fog lights, not hooked up

>Power steering pump and reservoir removed, lines looped

>Ad said manual trans; while technically true, it was an auto from the factory, and the owner before him who did the swap neglected to hook up the clutch starter interlock as well as the fucking reverse lights

>Misaligned starter; grinds when the solenoid disengages

>Driver's window sticks at halfway point

>SRS light lit

And the worst part is that after I found all that out, I still bought it. Thankfully I at least had the presence of mind to talk him down from 2500, but I really really should've walked on it.

I got a 98 firebird for 500 with a blown head gasket. How bad did I fuck up here? The engine is practically impossible to work on but for 500 I kind of just said fuck it.

>93 plymouth acclaim

>shit condition, price suddenly went up $50 night of purchase

>broken glass in the back seat

>someone stuck a soda bottle in the gas tank intake

>stalled on every bump because nobody changed the spark plugs for years

>ran just fine after that was fixed

>broke down when I couldn't afford to repair it

>it's rusting now, or dead in a junkyard

>it will never be brought back to driving condition

>it will never exist again

Honestly the rest of the car is in pretty good shape. Tires are good, calipers work… the only thing is the head gasket and the fact that the last owner was some jersey douchebag. Oh that and a scratched quarterpanel and tail light.

Usually when a head gasket fails it also warps the head or some other catastrophic damage that needs some serious machining to fix. That being said, cheap LS motors from trucks are a dime a dozen at the local junkyard.

I was definitely considering the ls1 when buying this. Thanks for the advice I'll have to do some research on what trucks have what tonight.

I just looked up that car. Well, you certainly have a future classic on your hands. Do not bork it up anymore than it already is. Plz no ls swaps.

You bought a good looking, reliable car.I replaced all of the top end gaskets on my 2000 bird when I bought it. The engine is not nearly as difficult as it seems to work on. There are some retarded brackets that bolt to the back of the heads, that's about the worst part of it. Please be sure it actually needs head gaskets, if it is blowing white exhaust smoke it probably just needs the intake manifold gasket replaced(extremely common issue in this engine, replace this gasket with an aluminized non plastic version). Do a compression test to be sure. If it does need headgaskets, god help you with those exhaust manifolds. Assuming you bought the 5 speed, enjoy your 300k+ mile car once you do that.

Thanks for the reassurance anon. Did you need to take out the entire motor from the bottom to do that or did you just work on the car from the top? I find it almost impossible to get my hands in there and I'm a pretty skinny motherfucker. In addition, after the winter I intend to perform a compression test to diagnose exactly what you said. Should I remove the boots from the bottom because it is realllly tough to get them off from the coilpack and the sparkplug.
