Friend just got back from overseas. Wants to buy an older car as a daily driver and as a hobby and he asked for my help not so much because of my mechanical expertise but because he's a babby and had a car thats not his mom's 2008 impala or a humvee. He asked me what I thought about the "shelby charger". Apparently thats an 80s subcompact…dodge charger that was built with the direct consultation of…Carroll Shelby.

So I'm pretty fucking confused. Anybody know anything about these cars? I haven't been able to find much? I tried talking him into something similar but more common like a datsun or a foxbody but he seems really set on it.

Never heard of it. I didn't even know they made Chargers in the 80s…

Right? I've reached the extent of my google fu and found nothing, just the usual for vintage cars that aren't imports or 60s muscle; fanboys saying they're the greatest car ever and naysayers saying they're utter hunks of junk.

I found these:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dodge_Charger_(L-body)

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shelby_GLHS#1987

Sounds like an FF turbo 4 cylinder. Like a fox body SVO but dinkier. Sounds like shit to me. Combined with 80s Chrysler rust I would avoid them like the plague.

The rust was my main concern. the snow and salt is pretty bad up here and I mostly know about bikes so I tried to steer him towards something newer but he's determined to get something vintage. I thought Fox bodies were somewhat sought after though? 88 mustang from texas was one of the others he showed me, for some reason he likes the little 80s domestics.

80s cars have a nice charm to them. If he's willing to go to Texas I'd sooner push someone towards a fox body Mustang than a Dodge I've never heard of, since Mustang parts will be a hell of a lot cheaper and easier to find.

But are there really no 80s Mustangs he can find without having to leave the state?

95% chance he ends up with a faggy WRX like all military bros who want to pretend to be "tuners".

No I mean it's a car from texas thats here. transplants from the west coast are sought after as they haven't had any new england winters under them

Trust me if he was on the west coast he'd have his pick of the shitbox litter

Alright. I daily drive a 86 Lebaron GTS. Basically the same car, same engine, etc. but with less power. I've had it for 4 years now, second owner. If its a west coast car, there's 0 rust involved. The head gasket is known for blowing if not properly warmed up before driving. Turbo only does 9 psi stock, and you better find one made after 87 with the turbo II engine because the turbo I really sucks for mods because of the intake setup.

Even then, modding for real horsepower requires knowledge and parts which are few and far between for these cars. Your better off with a ford fox body, trust me. Both in terms of maintenance and modding.

Ask me anything, I do all my own work on it.

Forgot to add. I'm part of the southern California K-Car Club (yeah its like a club for guys with std's but still) and I truly do mean I've never seen a car with rust. I've seen roached out pieces of shit, begging to be junked. I've seen total, showroom new restores. No rust, but then again I'm west coast.

They ride real smooth and have some power, but they don't handle worth a shit.

Water pumps are pain in the fucking ass to change. Left side tire comes off, all belts, crank pulley, water pump pulley, then like a billion bolts holding it in.

Same as rack and pinions. Pain in ass.

Common maintenance couldn't be easier tho. Distributor and rotor are literally in your lap. Oil filter is accessible from the top of the car. Get some real good quality spark plug wires for it, you will notice a difference from shitty wires. I stuffed an MSD coil in mine, made it so much smoother.

If you have a car with the turbo I engine, dont bother with mods. At all. The bottom end is the same as turbo II engines (iirc) but intakes and exhaust manifolds are way easier to work with and flow better in turbo II.

Tl;Dr - I am a k car god, and unless your buddy works at an auto repair, dont buy one. I love the fuck out of mine and will never get rid of it, but trust me when I say a fox ford is light years better and easier to work on.

Here is my LeBaron with my Thunderbird Turbo Coupe (fox body ford)
