spent 4 hours going to 7 dealerships today. whole lot of shady salespeople who either basically shooed me out the door when I told them my comfort zone was 6-8k and 10k the absolute max, or tried to bully me into their financing and spending more than I can afford when I told them I had financing and a loan through my bank.

Came through with a 2007 focus and a 2007 Ion as the only decent choices. I'm not a mechanic, and I'm not a car guy though I really want to be and hope to be in the future. fact is I need a reliable and inexpensive to own vehicle that gets decent mileage, is maneuverable, and not ultra-gay.

is there any legitimate reason not to go with either of these two? I already decided against a Saab 9-3 and a Mitsubishi Lancer because I realized I'm not going to magically become a mechanic overnight or even someone who has money to burn on their car. Sure one day I want a project car I can tinker with and be proud of, but right now I need a rock. Visiting some more places on the other side of the state where some family friends (who all work or have worked in the automotive industry including sales and repairs) live and they're gonna take me to some of the places they know but these two are likely to still be my top choices if everything else I've seen is any indication

The 69 442 Hurst will have to wait

Just background info, Not my first car and not a novice drive. almost ten years of experience on the road, I've owned a Delta 88, a Ranger, and a Cavalier. I can check fluids, change oil, air filters, tires, ect but thats about it.

Cars I decided against:

Honda S2000 - Way too expensive for what they are

Subaru Impreza/WRX -

Saab 9-3 - Liked the car but the dealer was shifty and I decided I didn't want to buy euro for reasons listed above

Mitsubishi Lancer GT - Wasn't at the lot when we got there and mechanic family friend's reply was "No" when I asked him about mitsubishi

Miata - local dealers don't have any in my price range

Hyundai Veloster - Was too far away to see and a little too expensive

Pics are my past. Just hit 100k on the cavalier, really wasn't ready to lose her yet

My friend had a 06 Mazda 6, manual for a while. I think it was the 5 door it was a few years ago so I don't remember. Pretty fun car If you can drive manual. I don't know much about them being reliable, he only kept it for a year before getting a 350Z.

If you can find a well priced Mazda 6 for under 9k. Try and get the manual. If you need more room go for a Mazda 3. I'm sure you can also find a Honda Accord or Toyota Camry for a good price under 10k, but I have a bit of a bias with Mazda as far as Jap cars go.

If you want American, go with a Crown Vic or something like it. Those V8s can last for 400k miles. if you don't want people thinking your a cop go with the Town Car or The Mercury Marquis. I don't know much about German cars or the quality on mid 2k VW's. I assume you don't have the money for a BMW.

I'm only suggesting that other stuff as filler, but I'd go with the Mazda 6 over anything else I suggested. Too bad you can't find an MX5.

I don't know anything about the Ion or focus to tell you if they're good or not.

It seems like you're looking for car buying advice. 6-8k puts you into a nice range and i don't see why you would have to settle for a piece of fucking shit saturn or a focus. Unless they are super clean and low miles, you're overpaying. The focus is much better by the way, and less gay. Honestly, if reliability is your priority, grab whatever used entry level economy car that has service history and idles smooth. You can't go wrong with a toyota. They are the cadillac of used economy cars for a reason. Even if you buy one that doesn't have service history, and something is broken that wasn't disclosed, it will still run years before it becomes an issue that you can't live with.

The more money you save on this purchase the more you'll have when you buy a project. Godspeed.

Craps out after 150k miles. Better fuel economy and cargo space can be had from the competition.

I don't care how few miles are on either of those, they are not worth anywhere near $10k.

Literally any Honda or Toyota MY2000 or earlier with a manual transmission, excluding the first generation Odyssey (I assume you aren't looking at mini-vans anyway). There is no reason whatsoever to look for anything else. Decent examples (100k-150k miles, clean) should exist for well under $8k, and for $8k you can probably get even fewer miles.

For something sporty(er), Civic Si or Celica. Well running examples should definitely exist for $8k or less.

$10k for a Focus is overpaying no matter how nice it is. Much better can be had for less money from the Japanese competition.

if all you need is reliability and fuel efficiency get a Civic or a Corolla

They went together so well.

We've all said the same things though. Honda Accord/Civic with a manual or a Camry/Corolla. Can you get those with manuals still? If you can find a Mazda 6 or 3 at least test it out, you might like it. You can't go wrong with the japs. Just don't think you'll never have problems.

What ever you do, get a jap car.

I've never seen a modern Toyota with a manual aside from the scion tc and 86GT/FRS. Honda I knew did them still. Manual is just rare in the states, or at least uncommon. You don't even learn how to drive a manual when they teach you to drive.

Are Nissan's worth bringing up for OP? Nissan Altima. The coupe if you can. Maxima if the price is fair. No idea what slightly older ones go for.

Update: went with the Saturn.just a hair over 6k with all the taxes and fees including new reg and plates. I'm not gonna deny that the disgust from car people at driving a saturn doesn't make me giggle.

I looked at some altimas but they were expensive for what they were. Also looked at Civics but was having trouble finding one that wasn't overpriced and/or in less than solid condition. I was driving a 2016 camry for a rental for 3 weeks and absolutely hated it.

I really am happy with my purchase though. It rides and handles really really smooth, the mileage is great. Pickups a little slower than the cavalier but higher speeds are measurably less straining. I'm not concerned with modding or tuning so much as learning more about basic repairs and theres pretty much no aftermarket support for ions other than the redline edition anyway. Probably gonna strip a lot of the sound deadening at least in the trunk. set of hybrid tires maybe. Only "mod" I can think of is to hook up an mp3 player or something because I don't know where any of my CDs are

I have a feeling you're gonna learn pretty quick, either with your hands or with your wallet… I don't know how reliable that specific platform is but I know the Cavalier before it was pretty shitty, and cars generally don't improve very quickly from generation to generation - especially Americans. I would have done what I suggested (obviously) but whatever, you do you.

I guess it's one way to learn how to work on a car. Buy one that will break and need work. Then you're forced to learn. That or just bring it to someone to fix and learn the repair is more than the car is worth.

Any jap car would have been a better pick even a fucking Yaris or Fit.
