Tell me about your music teachers. I've went through three piano teachers growing up. The first one worked out of the basement of a large conservatory. She screwed up my early development by teaching me that there were, "positions", that every piece had and I had to just learn the position to play them. This is of course completely inaccurate for anything above the most basic level. She was also boring as fuck. My second teacher was a short, Singaporean women at the same conservatory. Hyper catholic that wore like five crosses all the time. she always asked me about my emotions and lectured me about being a soulful person when I told her I was just fine. Better than the first one. My third teacher was Polish and drove to my house. I learned 99% of what I do from her.

There's a big problem in private music teaching; they don't focus enough on etudes. Etudes are essential to developing the skills you need in more advanced pieces. Having the techniques down cuts the time it takes to learn a piece by more than half and makes your playing more reliable during performances. If you're actually serious about learning how to play an instrument, GET AN ETUDE BOOK.

I never understood the etude appeal when so many pieces have extremely difficult sections that you can practice instead. And at the end of the practice you can play an actual piece of music instead of nothing. Unless you actually want to play etude derived muzak.

Any particular composer or book compilation?

The, "difficult sections", of a piece could be very or long or very short and can involve many different techniques. An etude focuses on a specific technique(s) and forces you to use it over and over again for a long duration. This is better for building hand strength and focused practicing. Instead of looking for a piece that happens to involve a lot of a certain technique, finiding an etude for it makes more sense.

lemme spoonfeed you

etude is a short musical piece written in such a way that a single playing technique is repeated over and over again so that perfecting the piece itself requires nailing that technique itself. in classical musical school, techniques are gradually acquired through playing etudes and gradually increasing technical difficulty, and playing practice is supposed to start with some scales, chords, and an etude in the same scales and requiring same skills as the piece you're currently practicing, as a fingering warm-up.
