Tell me about your music teachers. I've went through three piano teachers growing up. The first one worked out of the basement of a large conservatory. She screwed up my early development by teaching me that there were, "positions", that every piece had and I had to just learn the position to play them. This is of course completely inaccurate for anything above the most basic level. She was also boring as fuck. My second teacher was a short, Singaporean women at the same conservatory. Hyper catholic that wore like five crosses all the time. she always asked me about my emotions and lectured me about being a soulful person when I told her I was just fine. Better than the first one. My third teacher was Polish and drove to my house. I learned 99% of what I do from her.
There's a big problem in private music teaching; they don't focus enough on etudes. Etudes are essential to developing the skills you need in more advanced pieces. Having the techniques down cuts the time it takes to learn a piece by more than half and makes your playing more reliable during performances. If you're actually serious about learning how to play an instrument, GET AN ETUDE BOOK.
