Why are you doing nothing but listening to music when you could be learning to play instruments instead? Maybe you already know a bit about playing and want to share something. I figured I would make this thread as a response to the Draw Threads on other boards, maybe breathe new life into this place. and maybe encourage people to start learning as well.

What instruments do you play/want to play and how is your progress? I feel like an intermediate level at a standard drum kit/drum set and its the most natural feeling instrument I can play. I really want to learn guitar but shit like chord changes are really hard for me so I just do basic slow strumming patterns.

I've been playing guitar off and on for years. Lack of talent, undirected practice and frequent breaks have left me pretty shit at it considering how long I've been at it, but I refuse to quit out of principle.

Lately I've had the itch to do computer music production again. Want to do lo-fi hip hop, Shawn Kemp/J Dilla like shit. Maybe try plugging in the git to make some "alt roc"/emo trap beats to pawn off on wanna-be soundcloud rappers.

I also have a desire to try live jamming on some grid based trigger pad controller. Something like the Monome Grid of Novation Lauchpad. They're usually used as combination sequencer/samplers, but if you can tune the pads to 4ths and they're layout is like that of guitar. Tom Quayle even has lessons about advanced jamming in all 4ths tuning on guitar, so I think you could directly translate that to one of these pad grids. I kind love the idea of doing spacey, synthy, future, live jazz jamming with a band.

I've been practicing guitar a bit every day for close to a month now. I'm not looking to be a shredder or anything, but I want to be able to add some variety to my music instead of being purely electronic.

Guys, should I learn to play ukelele? Or are there superior small strung instruments out there?

>What instruments do you play

Guitar and Piano.

>how is your progress

My progress on guitar is 0. Because I'm lazy and I know with some practice I can get back to a moderate level.

Progress on piano is ok. I'm very early intermediate so I can sit down and play bits of Beethoven sonatas which is fun. But I'd like to get up to late intermediate so I have some speed which is all finger strength and technique.

Main thing is I really need to improve my ear training. I can take an interval test and get 80-90% but then in real time I have no idea what's being played. I also can't sing for shit and I'm retardedly embarrassed about practicing.

I'd pass on the virgin ukelele and instead opt for the chad octave mandolin.

If I wanted something that big I could just grab a guitar and tune it to sound something closer to that. I want to play a small stringed instrument I can just pull out and jam with to help me practice for other instruments

most of my guitar parts in Gaskeri are based on tritones, halftones and whole tone scales, sometimes double tracking two of the same guitar riffs a half step or whole step lower or higher. I just want to annoy the little fans I have by being a music theory asshole.

I know that feel. I wish I had a quiet place to just learn at my own pace
