What do you think should be considered the worlds greatest pop song(s)? Remember, strictly pop songs here. And I mean pop in the purest form of the definition

>The Lion Sleeps Tonight - The Tokens

>Hey Jude - The Beatles

>Rock and Roll - Led Zeppelin

>Raspberry Beret - Prince

>Billie Jean - Micheal Jackson

>Imagine - John Lennon

>California Dreamin' - The Mamas & the Papas

I think Somebody I Used to Know is one of the most unique pop songs of the entire decade.

I remember how hopeful it made music critics, but the charts are still full of garbage lol

I still find it insane that the most viewed video on Youtube changed twice in the span of the same week, and in the week prior to Gangnam Style's 5th anniversary. It's a feat I doubt will happen again for many years, if ever. In a way it shows how increasingly enslaved the upcoming generation(s) are to the internet with a renewed interest in old media, a trend that will continue exponentially during the next few years.

Gangnam Style was basically the Macarena of this decade, so at least it will most likely be remembered as much. I doubt the same will go for Despacito; I'm 99% positive it won't for See You Again as I can't even remember a single line from it or the fact that Wiz Khalifa was not the featured artist on it (I thought it was a Charlie Puth song and forgot Wiz was even on it). I think people would have completely forgot about the former if not for the Despacito 2 meme I see spammed in YT comments now which says a lot. What do I know though, I stopped following current pop hits after the mid 2000s.

Very few songs of any decade are remembered.

An example I always like using is Who's Holding Donna now.

This song was a top ten single in 1985, have you ever heard it before? Probably not.

Despacito will probably be remembered like we remember "Kung Fu Fighting" by Carl Douglas. Its one of the best selling singles of all time but ultimately its just a novelty song from and nothing particularly good or special.

I'm referring to the original, anon. I know it was covered by a few other artists, but I'm talking about Gotye's song.

If you think Gotye's song is a cover of Figure 8's song by the same name you should know they're completely different songs that merely share the same title. The Fear by Death Grips isn't a cover of The Fear by John Maus, for example.

Does power pop count? If so, these are some of my favorites:

Another Girl, Another Planet - The Only Ones

Starry Eyes - The Records

September Gurls - Big Star

Teenage Kicks - The Undertones

Surrender - Cheap Trick

Couldn't I Just Tell You - Todd Rundgren

Top of the Pops - The Rezillos

Cruel to be Kind - Nick Lowe

Ghosts of Princes in Towers - The Rich Kids

Shake Some Action - The Flamin' Groovies

I Am the Cosmos - Chris Bell

>Remember, strictly pop songs here. And I mean pop in the purest form of the definition

>Hey Jude - The Beatles

For strict pop, something like I Wanna Hold Your Hand, A Day in the Life, or Nowhere Man would probably be a better fit from the Beatles. Hey Jude is more a rock ballad. Also don't forget the other greats from the 60s like Be My Baby and Good Vibrations.

>Rock and Roll - Led Zeppelin

I know rock was technically a form of pop music, but by the time this song came out there was already a clear distinction between the types of music the terms pop and rock, especially hard rock, referred to. Very few people in the early 70s would have referred to Zeppelin as a pop band, least of all Zeppelin themselves. Page flat out said that "pop music" was rubbish.

This is something people often forget.

 No.95182

To me "Pop" is any song that people have no problem broadcasting over the airwaves to have people blare in their cars and Rock and Roll by Zeppelin fits that. I don't think "pop" is necessarily a bad word.

 No.95187>>95201

I'm not sure what you mean by pop but if you're talking about success in the mainstream not limited to certain artists then like

Says the best ones aren't really pop songs, just songs that happened to find popularity.

 No.95201>>95225

>the best ones aren't really pop songs, just songs that happened to find popularity.

Historically speaking, the most successful songs of the 20th and 21st century are the songs that fall into that fringe-zone of unique enough to stand out yet also have a level of accessibility for the mainstream. That's why I mainly have a problem with defining what pop actually is.

Sniffin' the Tears - Driver's Seat

Eddie Money - Shakin'

Edwyn Collins - Girl Like You

Alright then I'm just going to list my personal favorites.

Some are just going to be mentioned as artists because their general track record is great tier, others will have an "x" to mark definitive still big today pop artists but the difference being that it's their only good song, and the rest will just be one hit wonders. This list is from the 80's to 2017 because that's all I know.

From the 80's:

Queen

Pink Floyd

Men at Work.

Aha-Take on Me.

Sweet Dreams-Eurythmics

Phil Collins-In the Air Tonight.

New Order and Giorgio Moroder deserve a mention.

Guns and Roses had some good ones.

Ac/Dc does too.

The Who outright just for Eminence Front.

Michael Jackson of course has to be on here but I never saw much in him.

90's:

At this point, Pop Pop turns into total garbage. it defines pop as becoming a slur in the music world so

-Rap.

-Rock.

-Electro.

That managed to get big were the only good things.

Blue-Eiffel 65

Daft Punk in general.

What is Love-Haddaway. (Seriously.)

Cream-Wu Tang Clan.

In general the NWA, and associates.

Biggie and Pac.

Cypress Hill.

Gangster's Paradise-Coolio.

And after that there isn't much else for rap. The 2000's arguably gets a fuck ton harder though.

Nine Inch Nails.

Primus.

Red Hot Chili Peppers.

Smashing Pumpkins-The beginning is the end is the beginning.

Soundgarden-Black Hole Sun.

Radiohead.

Nirvana Does not get my vote, reminder Kurt fucked a fat retarded chick to lose his virginity like a nigger.

I'm going to try and make the 2000's as short as I can because I can't stand half the music.

2000's:

Eminem.

Saturday-Ludacris.

Kanye West.

Crazy-Gnarls Barkley.

Outkast.

Britney Spears-Toxic's instrumental.

Coldplay-Viva La Vida.

Coldplay in general used to be good, ignore the fact that the band is a conglomerate of assholes and their music on it's own is great.

The White Stripes.

M.I.A ignoring politics.

2010's:

At this point the list will be the largest since this is the easiest for me to remember since it's the most recent.

Empire State of Mind still gets me even though by all means it shouldn't. X.

Rolling in the Deep. X.

Stereo Hearts was pretty good.

We are Young-Fun

Radioactive-Imagine Dragons. X.

Daft Punk makes a resurgence and so does Eminem but only for a while.

Awolnation gets big and for good reason.

Hold on we're Going Home-Drake. X.

Little Talks-Of Monsters and Men.

Riptide-Vance Joy.

Both are pretty good one hit wonders.

Counting Stars-One Republic.

Pompeii-Bastille.

Coldplay also semi re surged before dying fully.

The Weeknd for the most part did good.

Waves-Mr.Probz.

Chandelier-Sia. X.

On a minor tangent dubstep got big but it's arguable as to whether it counts as Pop so all I'm going to say is that Skrillex is on here because every other song he used to make was genuinely good at times.

I took a Pill in Ibiza-Mike Posner, the remix of course.

Me, Myself, and I-G Eazy.

Half of Childish Gambino.

As much as I grew distaste for them people like XXXTentacion, Juice Wrld and other sound cloud rappers which went from obscure to pop in 2 years still have a spot in my heart. So most recently they get to be on this list.

Now before anyone points out everyone in this list is an asshole, a washed up asshole, or just overall bad, yes it's pop, what did you expect.

The "Best" of pop will never even get near the "Best" of music as a whole. Not even in the top 1000. But for the most part these are the songs I think are the best from Pop.
