i remember hearing a story where george had trouble with some guitar line on a hard day's night or some other early record and after a while of him messing up the producer and got tired and suggested paul try it out. george went off to sulk while paul got it down pretty quick. so george was never the most technically accomplished guitarist.

huh, never heard it put that way. I always thought he meant that he or Paul are better drummers than Ringo, but since they're also far better guitarists than Ringo, it makes sense for them to play guitar and Ringo to play drums

While that may be true, John and Paul to a lesser degree were always known for their banter and wit towards reporters. One time when a reporter asked Paul what his hair style was called he just replied "Arthur". They just didn't give a fuck
