I have no idea. For some reason, its stripped-down nature should make it dull, but apparently this is exactly what forces composers to actually polish the songs structurally and not rely on the flash factor like so many other genres do. In the end you have a dull genre producing disproportional amount of great songs. Songs that likely wouldn't even work in more complex arrangements.

I've listened to all the "classics" stuff listed here and I would recommend Dolch, Forgotten Pathways, Gothmog and Nazgûl as the best ones so far, but you should check the other artists too, of course.

Did any of you listen to dark ambient projects of LLN such as Aäkon Këëtrëh? That sounds pretty much like dungeon synth combined with black metal guitars.
