I'm no fan of religion, but taking shots at Christianity is one of the most played-out forms of "edginess" there is. Ripping on rednecks and white trash is another low-hanging fruit that has been picked to death even more. If that was even considered provocative back when Bill Hicks was doing it in his standup act in the '80s and '90s, it sure is worn out now.
As passe as it is today, I can understand extreme metal bands who still use satanic imagery for the aesthetic appeal. It's basically a tradition at this point.
