What is the difference between a monarch and a dictator, /monarchy/?

> Next is the difference between a monarch and a despot. Quoting Montesquieu:

>>of a monarchy, that the prince should have this power, but in the execution of it should be directed by established laws; of a despotic government, that a single person should rule according to his own will and caprice

>In other words, there is some sort of law above the King. Whether it be from the church, aristocracy, parliament, or independent judiciary is no matter. Even if that law provides the King with extraordinary powers, they would still be a King rather than a despot. Or, to put it differently, just as they are born into their position they are born into their power.

In a monarchy the oldest child inherits the position of power. In a dictatorship it's decided by a internal vote in the party or the military. So North Korea is technically a monarchy

Nothing in practice, really. A monarchy is just a dictatorship with many successors of the same family.

All monarchies start out as dictatorships. The first kings didn't ask for their kingdoms, they founded their kingdoms out of the land they conquered. The divine right of kings, familial successors, and crowns are just window dressing.

A monarchy typically has hereditary rules of succession and crowning ceremonies etc. whereas a dictator is a lot more informal typically. No dictator really calls themselves a dictator but monarchs happily call themselves monarchs. Usually dictators enter office by force or political guile whereas monarchs are typically born to the role, or were otherwise in the line of succession.

Legitimacy. What right has been granted to a dictator to rule over a nation? Did he not simply gain his position by utilizing populism? He was not born and raised to rule, and his leadership is, in truth, backed by nothing other than himself. A Monarch embodies the highest ideal of a nation and has been granted his role through a completely legitimate line of succession. In most cases, his leadership is backed by a hereditary line and the longstanding religion of the Kingdom.
