What are your opinions on medieval non-democratic republics (Venice, Novgorod, the Old Swiss Confederacy, etc.)? Are they a passable alternative to modern demotic systems of government?

They're better, but a monarchy is still better, OP. Republics back then aren't like republics today. The biggest problem with modern republicanism is its rootless, imaginary idealism and democratic leaning.

As long as there is no worldwide ideological republican craze, they are tolerable. Being a pan-monarchist is necessary to handle the republican universalism. Pic related demonstrates the ideological republican madness, best observed in anarchists with their carbon-copy mold flags that all look the same and represent nobody… but ideals…
