MDE probably kept him occupied and stable as it gave him something to channel his sociopathic tendencies into, even giving him a support group in the form of co-members, friends and online fans to keep his ego satisfied. Being from Rhode Island and going to a decent University probably helped him as well, as he would have been around people who pride themselves on self-control and subtlety.
