Hello o/

Im going to the art middle-school this year and i wanted to try Opencanvas 6 so i bought graphic tablet (bamboo MTE-450) yesterday. First time it just feels wierd but after hour of making circles and stuff, i tried to create something …

So i got some questions :

- Opencanvas 6 or Paint tool Sai ?

- Which tablet is best for animations/painting?

(Also my english is not perfect so exuse my grammar ^^)

Thank you.

I think on your budget a Huion H610 pro tablet would be a nice bet. It's not quite as good as a wacom and you'll have to fight with the drivers to get them to work with your software but they're cheap as balls (less then 1/3 the price of the comparably sized intuos medium).

Ideally though you're learning to draw, so stay off of digital for a while and stick to cheap pencils and paper. It is far easier to draw with traditional media and during the learning process it's all about repetition and volume.

Sorry for bumping an old thread, but I feel like I have trouble bringing myself to actually draw on paper, where starting something (extremely simple) on various "tablet" WiiU/3DS style things comes pretty easily.

Admittedly this could be due to a lack of proper area to draw, but this has had me musing over the idea of buying a small drawing tablet and trying to learn on that.

Would that be a decent idea, or just a waste of money that will either end up putting me off picking up drawing/dooming me to terrible habits?

Small tablets are bad in my opinion, and indeed they put me off drawing for a long time when I was your age because I was intimidated by how crappy drawing on them was and thought it would always be that way. I would try and save up your money for now for something bigger. The Huion Giano is less than $200 and it's perfect. It might be a little more than you're willing to spend right now but that's okay, just try and learn to draw with cheap stuff in the interim. Printer paper and store-bought pencils sharpened with a box cutter or safety-edge razor are the best thing for the money.

I own a small Bamboo Pen. Although it has functioned for a while, it's non-ideal for me. I'm looking into getting a Huion H610.

Small tablets are atrocious.

The things I draw on mine and the things I draw on paper almost look like two different artists drew them. Like >>2260 said, it's not ideal to use printer paper and ticonderoga's, but they're sure as shit better than learning on a tablet with an active area smaller than the Wii U gamepad's.

As an aside, printer paper's cheap quality and penchant to tear also means that you won't be able to erase as much and would be forced to learn not unlike using ink on higher quality paper.

This is all honestly pretty surprising to hear, since I had read else wear that it was bad to get a larger tablet for learning.

As said before, I find it really difficult to draw anything on paper these days.

Maybe it's the permanence of having it sitting there in front of me, I don't know, but I'd still like to get a tablet.

The Giano does look really nice, but I really don't know if I want to drop such a sizable portion of my terrible paycheck on it.

I've had several different Wacom, Huion, and Monoprice tablets sitting in my Amazon list for months, and the H610PRO sitting at $70 right now looks pretty nice in both size and price.

Would the Giano really be THAT big of an upgrade over that so as to demand twice the price?

Pic related is a doodle or two that I did on Swapnote/Miiverse respectively.

That's ridiculous, lol. If you want a good sense of what it's like drawing on a small tablet, increase your mouse sensitivity by 30-50% and see what that feels like. It's pretty much exactly like that except with a pen. The tablet has to compress your monitor's screen down to the size of the tablet's active area so for example an inch on your tablet will be two or three on the monitor. Even a medium sized tablet like the H610 is a little quick for my tastes. Your pay check may be small, but a tablet is an investment that will last you for 'years' so definitely consider getting the best thing you can conceivably afford.

>so definitely consider getting the best thing you can conceivably afford.

Hypothetically, if I really wanted to go full retard, I could probably manage even an older used Cintiq, but that'd be just stupid.

I'll admit that I'm a cheap fucker, and that I'd hate to spend a decent amount of money that I may not even end up making use of. That's more of a fault with me, but still.

>I'll admit that I'm a cheap fucker, and that I'd hate to spend a decent amount of money that I may not even end up making use of.

I'm actually extremely frugal myself, but I've owned a lot of tablets - so by all means let my past experience be to your advantage.

Bamboo/Other small tablets: Trash

Cintiq 12WX: Trash

Intuos 5 Medium: Okay

Huion H610: Okay

Intuos 3 Medium: Pretty Good

Intuos 5 Large: Great

Huion Giano: Great

I wasted over $1,200 on Wacom's Cintiq 12WX; a device that had less colors than a typical consumer-grade monitor, and an irreversible error that caused the pen's sensitivity to spike after a random, arbitrary number of strokes. It was ass and it's $1,200 I will never get even 1/4th of back in all likelihood. The tablet you buy could be the difference between you having an enjoyable experience learning how to draw, or being put off from the subject for years so don't sweat a couple hundred bucks, bro.

If you're going to go with the "budget" Huion brand specifically what would you spend that extra $100 (the difference in price between the Giano and H610) on anyway? It's really not that much money, my man. You have the benefit of learning from my past mistakes and the availability of today's technology. Whatever you get don't worry about the price because a good drawing tablet will hold a good portion of its value for a long time (as opposed to a shit one like the 12WX that was practically worthless just months after its release). If you give up within like 5 years you will, in all likelihood, be able to sell whatever tablet you buy for at least 70% of its value to another individual if it comes down to it; don't think of it as you spending money, you're mostly just shuffling your money around.

A tablet is an investment, and though it's one that's guaranteed to depreciate to some degree, the one you choose could have a profound affect on whether or not you get your feet off the ground and that's worth a hell of a lot more than a couple hundred dollars.

If you plan on getting the Huion Giano It'd probably be wise to wait a few days/weeks/months until it is available on amazon before getting it, then I think you'd get free shipping costs so you avoid having to pay an extra $20 something

I'm pretty much convinced at this point, but on the topic of Amazon, is there even the vaguest idea of when it could end up there?

While getting free shipping would be nice, I've been putting off buying a tablet for far too long, and I'd rather not wait another month or three before it ends up there or worse, have it end up getting a hefty price increase in the process.

Unless they're adding $20 to the initial price, adding it to my cart doesn't seem to show any shipping costs; Perhaps actually trying to purchase it will change that, I dunno.

Until the 31st of this month, they're offering free shipping on it, so unless you really want to hold off until you can grab it from Amazon, now may be the time to jump on it.

Read the thread my man, the H610 is about as cheap as you want to get, but I don't recommend cheap necessarily.

I'm a little leery about the flash drive/wireless adapter that comes with it. It is worth $200 easily without the wireless, regardless. In my mind it is second only to the Intuos Large when it comes to traditional desktop-style tablets, and it's under half the price.
