kept an eye out for it for years at the back of my mind (on a long list) when browsing secondhand bookshops and read it for the first time therefore only three years ago.
Brilliantly comic, but ultimately a minor work, in my view. It's very much of its time and in the genre of Catch 22 or Cuckoo's Nest. What I found lacking in it was range of character and their development. A common feature of modern American literature is the deranged hero with a cast of nut characters, and the work becomes no more than an illustrated freak show.
I feel great literature has to reach beyond solipsism, have a plot which develops universal themes, and have characters deeper than cutouts

Poor health. Bad upbringing. If you gave Ignatius a good father and he had the physique of Zyzz you probably wouldn't find any problems with him.
I'd like a book like that. A Confederacy of Dunces, except it's a man raised without a mother who is fucking ripped. I suppose the Christian reactionary trope is played out so he'd have to be pagan, and some sort of racial mix.

very online people tend to gravitate towards one another once they start trying to escape. it's the withdrawals since most people don't share very interesting thoughts. and the loneliness makes their hormones completely out-of-whack. lonely people fuck like there is no tomorrow. which is a good thing if they understand rhythm (most people have rhythmic thoughts - I know this due to paragenetic clairvoyance) but a very bad thing if they are perennial fuckers who never get past the initial curve of lacklustre fumblage. but then again when you're alone for a while nothing compares to your fantasies anyways, you're always ready to check out, so even a good experience can sail over your head.

I agree that it's very funny, though it has a largely pointless story. That's the reason why it was so hard for the author to publish it, which is what made him catch the bus in the end.
Do you guys know of any more comical books?
