Something along these lines is unironically something millenials should start looking into. Not to much bum living, but just learning to live BELOW your standards while also learning how to save and invest your money, no matter how much you make. So much of boomers and even Gen X is about going into debt in order to have a McMansion, go on expensive vacations all the time, buying brand new cars and boats ect. while they live paycheck to paycheck and struggle to keep their heads above water, knowing that if they lost their job or anything major happened, they would be fucked.

Your independence is only compromised if the relationship is non-voluntary. Otherwise receiving gifts would suddenly render you without agency, which it doesn't. If you voluntarily receive shelter, food, what-have-you from others who, themselves, voluntarily give it to you there is no compromising of sovereignty for anyone. Disagreeing with this is tantamount, it seems, to arguing that all men are slaves that are not so independent as to be free from interacting with others entirely.

I'd argue further that receiving stolen money (so-called government money) isn't explicitly non-libertarian either, but that's only from a certain point of view. Obviously the moment government is involved it's non-libertarian, because someone was robbed to enable whatever is being discussed. However, if the recipient didn't cause or enable the theft in any way, they've simply agreed to receive goods. There's nothing explicitly non-libertarian about simply receiving goods.

Perhaps my understanding of the term differs from yours, since I don't see "self-reliance" as being a necessary part of it. I'm a fan of self-reliance, I think it's a good way to go about securing yourself from the whims of others and fate and all, but I don't think it's a necessary component of Libertarianism. I think it's more of a commonly-found attribute of Libertarian thinkers, ideas and such. The central idea of Libertarian thought, as I understand it, is sovereignty - like you've mentioned. But I don't interpret that to mean self-reliance, I interpret that to mean "freedom from domination". In this way, someone who is completely dependent on someone else is ideologically fine so long as no party is forcing the situation to be that way. If the provider, the provided-for or some third thuggish party were using force to secure the situation ("Give this man life support or go to the PAIN SPHERE!", for example) then It's wrong, but otherwise I see no reason why it should be considered ideologically faux-pas.

Libertarianism has connotative and cultural implications as well as strictly denotative ones. Someone who goes to a 9-5 job 5 days a week, pays for everything himself, and fails to get taxes taken from his paycheck is living in a libertarian way insofar as he's not being coerced. But compared to, say, someone who sets out on his own to the frontier to start a life completely on his own terms, he's not culturally libertarian at all.

There are many things to consider. I've recently been binging on jewtube "prepper" content and learning a lot about various ways to approach and embrace the frugal life. Things like solar energy aren't particularly viable at the moment, but in 5-10 years there likely will be cost effective. These are just some electricity saving things I've learned about. 99% of your savings will simply come from eating a proper diet that consists heavily of beans and rice. Any other penny pinching methods honestly pale in comparison to a bare bones bland healthy diet of rice, beans, oats, fruits, and vetetables. I'm trying to find and compile a collection of decent and rare prepper/frugal living books, but some are only possible to find in paperback such as "Simply Prepared: A Guide to Emergency Preparedness and Food Storage". Maybe I might buy it and do scans of it, could be a nice little hobby.
