if your business is more profitable than the established ones, then you will be able to afford security, defense. you may to take financing such as venture capital or high-yield bonds until you can support it with revenue. but you can finance it.
worst case would be that theres a certain threshold of x-factor of improvement before its worth the security costs. so instead of moving when you have 3% improvement you need to wait for 1000% improvement. but even then, odds are the established businesses will just buy your technology because they can also make more money that way, even though they are at ~100% market share regardless of what they do.
and thats a worst case. defense is way cheaper than offense. establishment threatening new businesses is gonna be a much much smaller portion of market making than apple locking people their devices via mere partial ownership of software bought from the appstore and said software only working on apple devices, for example.
