He certainly presented himself as quite the classical liberal, however his beliefs on interventionism eventually just showed him out to be an average Cold War conservative, with the redeeming factor here being that he was against the draft.. I'd still put him leagues above most of the politicians at the time but that's not saying much.
Fun fact though: His son ended up supporting Ron Paul in his first presidential campaign.
