It was mostly a war of resources. The Soviets went with quantity over quality and it was a working strategy, albeit "quantity" in this case consisting of lost human lives. Germany never had the smallest shred of a chance of winning on a billion fronts anyway. Every side made mistakes in the war, but none of them would matter as much. The Germans weren't even really getting their assess beat that much. They ended up starving to death with no bullets left, as they did not expect to take so long to finish Russia off. Very wishful thinking considering their entire war effort was fueled by nothing but deb and some of their loaners went to war against them.

Their position wasn't advantageous but I wouldn't call it unwinnable. If Hitler and his advisers were a little less schizophrenic on strategy, cooled down their superheavy tank autism, and learned to into logistics and ease of maintenance they would have fared much better in the war.
