Would it be worse or better to have tariffs provide funding for government instead of taxes?

 No.85629

Better for whom? People, government, justice, communism, or some exact person?

For the ordinary person? No. Prices will go up.

I heard somewhere that it was how the US government was funded until the Civil War, and it would make sense to have a government dependent on commerce moreso than exploiting a tax base.

Unsurprisingly, the state always needs money to exist and since the American Revolution was supposedly started because of taxes, they came up with a tariff, which is essentially just another kind of tax.

I wouldn't say so, it's better to blatantly and directly fuck people over, even writing "we are stealing your money for the greater good" on the bill, than to get money by fucking with the economy in other ways. It's the same with inflation, the government prints money and gets richer, but it's the people that get fucked over in the longer term, and they don't even know they're being fucked over.

I think tariffs on sizeable imports would be superior, as it would eliminate the infringement on privacy that normal taxes tend to engage in. The tremendous wealth that would be created by a minarchist/free market state would attract a lot of imports, probably enough to fund said state in and of themselves.

If for some reason it was not enough to fund a minarchist state, individual donations (see classical Athens for a historical example of this working) would probably make up the difference.
