Party members lived a life of opulence compared to their worker comrades.

This isn't news. The Bolsheviks weren't communists and everyone knows this. The communist faction in the Russian Revolution was the Blacks, and they got by for years thanks to more than 100,000 troops defecting from the Red and White armies to join the Blacks for the cause of liberty. Eventually they were steamrolled by the Bolsheviks, whose ideology amounted to the same totalitarian statism coming into vogue in the rest of Europe at the time with a few out-of-context Marx quotes thrown in for good measure, who then proceeded to actively shit everything up in the entire world for the next 90+ years

They tried War Communism during the civil war and got a famine. It went away with the NEP, and came back when Stalin got rid of that.

The only communism is anarchocommunism. Marx wrote about a classless society where everyone shows up to work because they enjoy the feeling of having rewarding work to do and doing it well. Then the Bolsheviks created a society where everyone is forced to work at the demand of their Party overlords and maybe if you're really good you can have an extra heel of stale bread at the end of the day, and said "now we've succeeded, because everyone calls everyone else comrade, which means that inequality has been vanquished forever!"

I'd suggest that you actually give the Manifesto a read. There's some genuinely good stuff in there, and none of it has anything to do with the shitpile that was the USSR.

Didn't some of the anarcho-communists of Marx's time not get a long with Marx?

there was a famous split between Marx and the anarchists. Bakunin said that Marx's ideas, followed to their conclusion, would result in either dictatorship or a new class society composed of bureaucrats. Bakunin was expelled from the International and the Marxists moved their headquarters to New York to avoid anarchist influence. these kind of questions are still points of contention on the far-left.

scroll to the last 6 or 7 paragraphs if you want to read his criticism.
