How can anyone defend the welfare state when welfare recipients are, by and large, the worst people you could ever meet? And it's not the poverty that's the problem. Welfare queens don't live in poverty. They have enough food to grow fat, they have more leisure than anyone else in society, and nowadays, all of them can afford a TV and a smartphone. If you're working and poor, chances are you have less money on your hand, and that's money you're actually working for. Besides, the working poor I've met weren't that bad. Still plebs, but not bad people at all. Not bitter and envious like the welfare queens, and unlike them, they actually genuinely care about family. In that regard, at least where I live, they're the best people you could hope to meet.
Crime ins't the problem, either. Where does all the crime come from in the first place? Would be one hell of a coincidence if it exploded at just the same time that the welfare state became overbearing. Poverty existed before the crime wave of the 60's, so it cannot be the cause. That poverty causes crime at all is unproven, too. The correlation is rather between crime and entitlement. Besides, if welfare was an effective means of fighting poverty, and if poverty caused crime, then we would expect a correlation between welfare and lack of crime. Yet such a correlation does not exist, so… how come people take any part of this narrative serious?
Nor is the main issue race. Every country that I know of has its "white trash" that's associated with welfare. Here in Germany, we call them "Hartzer". The stereotype is a fat, middle-aged women who constantly fights with her husband in some strange dialect no one understands and doesn't look after her three children, all of whom have trendy names. Terribly original, I know. That's my point: Every country has shitty, white people because of the welfare state. So race cannot be the main issue.
We know that voters are driven by emotions, but where is the emotion of disgust when it comes to people who lived twenty years on welfare? Everyone hates welfare queens, but no one dares make them the target of an attack. It's really not that hard to differentiate them from the people that genuinely cannot work or that haven't found a new job after a few months, either.
