It's not a technical guide, and it's obviously not set in the 20th or 21st century, but
>I highly recommend finding some of Joseph Conrads writings if you're into adventure stories, and the more personal aspects of life as a sailor or in one story a hussar officer.
Most of his stories are related to his real life experiences as part of his career as a boat captain in the congo and sailing to east Asia. Very spoopy stuff. I managed to buy his whole collection of stories for $1 at a monastary library that had a shelf of books that were for sale (all of them around 1$). So if anyone lives in Oregon and wants to find some cheap books, just go to the Mount Angel monastery library. I always like adventure stories, but unlike Ernest Hemingway who paints these really dull dry stories, Joseph Conrad's stories have war, cannabilism, and all the social conflicts that come up within navies, merchant ships, and in battle.
