You can add a muzzle device, make the grips very ergonomic, and lower the bore axis, but that's all. Handguns have to be small to be actual handguns, therefore they are very cramped inside, thus it's hard to come up with clever mechanical designs to reduce felt recoil. Their low mass doesn't help either, and they obviously lack the most basic device that helps you handlee recoil: a stock. From a purely theoretical standpoint your best bet is a revolver that has the barrel at the 6 o'clock position. Here's why:
<the grip doesn't have to accomodate a magazine, therefore you can go crazy there
<the barrel is fixed, so you can add any muzzle device that you want (as long as you mind the weight)
<the bore axis can be "negative", that is, lower than the top of the hand
<there are no mechanical parts that move on their own after firing, so you don't have to mind them
Of course you can try to make a self-loading pistol that has lower felt recoil, but you shouldn't design it with only that in mind. Otherwise you will end up with a new Hudson H9, and that's a fucking bad joke.
