There's no discharge in the war!

what ever happened to slapping additional auto-cannon on the side of turrets of MBT (all Slave derived stuff IIRC)?

I remember seeing one from some Muslim nation that had twin 30mm on each side of turret, and IIRC an asymetric prototype from India with two diff size of auto-cannon.

These were ADDITIONAL auto-cannon and they kept the main 125mm gun.

Debatable usefulness compared to costs, I'd wager.

yeah, but……

looked really cool like the cover art of bad sci-fi novel.

seems like a pretty good idea since those tanks only carry very limited ammo for the 125mm, but its also fairly easy to find cover against 30cal or even 50cal.

125mm also suffers from low rate of fire, but an auto-cannon can still de-tread or otherwise disable APCs or even MTBs.

Why do you post like a fresh off the boat cuckchanner?

>tanks only carry very limited ammo for the 125mm

Most tanks carry roughly 40 rounds of ammo. Unless you're in an area of extremely heavy fighting, that's plenty. Also, where are you planning on storing this 20-35mm ammo and how much are you capable of holding?

>its also fairly easy to find cover against 30cal or even 50cal.

The presence of those weapons is what forces the enemy infantry into areas where the main gun can knock them out without issue.

>125mm also suffers from low rate of fire

Autoloaders on average take somewhere between 5 to 10 seconds, some less. Human loaders, in the short term at least, are easily comparable. That's hardly a hindrance.

>an auto-cannon can still de-tread or otherwise disable APCs or even MTBs

How many APCs or MTBs do you think a tank fights per 'sortie'?

20mm autocannons lack infantry killing capability due to limited explosive/fragmentation effect based on size. At the same time they are not nearly enough to penetrate proper armour anymore.

Thus 20mm autocannons went out of style. The only reason we still keep them on IFVs is because we don't really have anything better for killing infantry inside of buildings without leveling the whole thing or burning it down.
