If you want to do IPSC style shooting sports the first thing to do is find a local club which does pistol shooting and join that, IPSC rifle and shotgun events are somewhat uncommon and most of the time clubs will just opt to do a general 3gun event instead. Pistol shooting is sort of the entry point to action shooting and the cost of it depends on what division you want to shoot in and how seriously you want to win, if you just want to go and have a good time then its pretty cheap (even to be competitive provided you shoot in production division).

In terms of long range shooting that's purely a rich persons game even in divisions which use open sights.

Fuck. Getting a pistol in Canada requires an additional license (with additional fees). Also, the government will take any chance it can to bend you over and fuck you if you have any of those and someone breaks into your house and runs off with them or you shoot them in self defense. Much harder to appeal to the jury when there were babykiller handguns and black rifles at stake. What about clays? is that also for rich bastards? Are over-unders absolutely necessary or is there a pump category anywhere? Don't want to invest in an overpriced over under when a pump works just as well for many more things and weighs less.

I live in the middle of nowhere, manage to shoot at home on a limited budget that can't really be expanded to travel to shooting competitions, plus I hate socializing, plus I hate competition (winning brings me no joy, losing brings misery), and I suffer competitive people. With all these factors, I simply cannot afford, nor do I really find the drive, to go to shooting competition, although I think others have told me I could do well.

The really super serial people will ruin it for many, they push too hard, run the sport, fight and make politics, try to control people and things. It will cost more money in ammunition compared to what many casual shooters will spend and shoot, especially if you want to do half decent. Many competitors handload for economics as well as quality, blowing through a few thousand handgun rounds is a simple task. It might wake you up and make you a better shooter, but it will also remind you how much you have to spend and shoot to be 'good".

It has its potential upsides, you can learn techniques and things form hardcore people who know and can teach. It can show you how fast and good a gun can be, opens your mind to possibilities. Can bring out the very best in a man, then again it might bring out some of his worst. Pushing yourself to the limit to beat others, but then again it distracts you from optimizing yourself to instead focus on beating others. Too much repetition can get you into a rut when a real life shooting (if you are preparing for military/police/self defense as a primary purpose) can be fast and flexible and make you do things you aren't trained for, in odd situations they don't do in competition. They will make you faster, but keep in mind shooting competitions will also be purely, 100% focused on making you a better shooter, not a better fighter, that's not so great, they won't tell you how to take cover or fight, just run hard and shoot. Or in long range, a great hobby, but yes expensive, will train you to really maximize that potential on the hunt.

Clay shooting is surprisingly cheap once you have the gun. Find a local club and ask if you can give it a try, there is probably a few people who will let you have a shoot with their gun or the club may have club guns available.

Pump shotguns are actually not allowed in clay shooting nor do you want to use one (I have used a pump before and I can see why), its either double barrels (with U/O being by far the most popular) or semi autos. Semi autos need to have their magazine blocked off so that only two shells can be loaded at a time (each clay you can only shoot at twice), people tend to go for double barrels since you can have two different chokes with the second barrel being tighter since that's your backup shot if you miss your first and as such needs to travel further.

Yea I have heard Canada is no-funz-allowed. Serious question, but have you considered moving to another country? handguns are quite easy to get here (it just takes time) and pistol shooting (as well as other forms of competitive shooting) is one of the fastest growing sports in the country there are so many people getting their firearms license or pistol endorsement that the police have something a 6-9 month backlog of applications.

Luckily they have their own containment zone, Open Division. Also that's one positive aspect of the system here where you need to be part of a club not to mention it gives you a range you can go to almost whenever you want for free, those sorts of people often find themselves pushed out of larger clubs which are mostly made up of people who just want to shoot guns and have fun. There are little clubs scattered over NZ made up of less than a dozen people each who got pushed out of the larger ones for being authoritarians.

You don't need to be a citizen to own guns in NZ, just a resident. For commonwealth countries its pretty easy to get residence from what I understand.

Longer barrel means more velocity and a longer sight radius but it really comes down to what you are comfortable with, however I wouldn't go shorter than say a 24" barrel.

It's a bit fucked but not completely fucked just yet. There's unrestricted, restricted, and prohibited classifications, though a lot of it is still full of bullshit that is obviously drafted by nogunz politician. IE the G11 being banned. Also depends on where you are, if you are in an urban downtown core which is filled with frankly, gommies level city council retards you can expect heavy hoplophobia. Though of course, don't be suprised if a few politicians has the near mythical concealed carry permit for themselves. Other than that, shooting sports are actually on the uptick outside the SJW central core cities. How long that can last though I don't know.

Can confirm. I wish I could show you a screenshot of my coworkers faces when I talk about hunting with some guy at work that comes from a rural area. Every major Canadian city is a carbon copy of San Francisco's worst aspects, without the nice weather.

Also, regarding CC, didn't you have to prove that you fear for your life on a daily basis or something to obtain that after a lengthy as fuck delay, no less. I'm pretty sure it's impossible to get anything like that without being in a witness protection program, at least 300km away from the nearest city and surviving two different car bombings or something.

It really is, the only major difference at the moment the shit is slightly better hidden compared to the U.S. however it's definitely there if you know where and when to look for it. Afaik and iirc looking at who can actually get a loicense for it. Unless you are a politician yourself, ex cop or mil, almost no one is getting that CC no matter what the exemptions says on the paper due to how Kafkaesque it is. The only real resistance here is yuppies moving out of Auckland into the surrounding areas and complaining about noise from ranges, but that's only an issue in Auckland.

That's a shame, here most of the time you just get indifference if you mention to someone you own guns or hunt. Guncity ran a whole lot of billboard ads here over the christmas period which showed kids shooting air rifles at targets with their father the kind of wholesome ad you would expect from 60s America and no one seemed to raise a fuss about it.
