I know that they're a meme, but is there any possibility of working out a black powder muzzle loader based on the Metal Storm design? Ignition could be handled with a det-cord equivalent running down the barrel and each of the stacked powder charges, setting them off in sequence. We probably wouldn't get the 1'000'000 rpm they managed with the metal storm prototypes, but you would definitely get a significant improvement over the 3rpm average you see with black powder muskets.
