First of all the round which is problematic can be modified to be superior while producing less momentum. Second of all fire rate of assault rifles shouldn't exceed 500rpm, rates of fire around 2000rpm are ridiculous 1980s excesses based on bullshit rule-of-cool reasoning and fudd science.
The purpose of an assault rifle is to fill a minute of man with bullets at a range of three hundred meters with enough energy to penetrate cover, where the uninterrupted burst from a single rifleman is long enough for a little over an average reload, so in case the three dudes in his fireteam are all retarded and unloaded, one guy can hold the line while they reload.
Range and energy requirement can be filled by any intermediate cartridge can fill it, and even some pistol cartridges, so designing a simpler caseless round which carries the heat out with it should be easy. Rate of fire requirement has a sweet spot of about 350-400 rounds per minute, but higher or lower rates are possible with smaller or larger magazines than a 20 rounder.
Ergo:
1. Fix projectile as per image. Volcanic has every advantage of caseless, while also having every advantage of cased ammunition. Russians were right.
2. Reduce full auto rate of fire to 400rpm. You don't NEED more, the enemy isn't going to be ducking and weaving out of six or seven rounds per second. As for "muh psychology" it even sounds fine, go to http://onlinetonegenerator.com/ select 5-10hz, select sawtooth, and click play.
3. Remove selector switch because with a low fire rate it's easy to do single shots. Can install a simple catch safety on trigger.
4. Remove ridiculous barrel reciprocation, make it simple redirected gas impinging on a simpler action.
5. Piezoelectric trigger, because why waste complexity on a primer? It's less voids in the action, which will be tougher with less mass.
There I just shaved off two kilos, used less materials, reduced cost by 3/4's, and turned it into an actual weapon of war.

The entire point of making it a cylinder is so it can roll which permits it to be double stacked and reduces complexity when it comes to loading the gun. Also it reduces fault-lines in the case itself and the chamber, thus reducing the necessary weight.
