Maybe not as grand as some of the others posted, but Operation Eland.
>July 1976, Rhodesian "civil" war
>Hugely major ZANLA staging base gets located.
>At least 5,000 personnel
>Firstly, capturees (including a ZANLA section commander) give up metric tons of information about the base
>Secondly, Special Branch Detective Section Officer Winston Hart of the Selous Scouts orders the search of "every capture and scrap of paper found in the rubbish tip, or on dead terrorists"
>Camp protocols, layout etc. completely revealed
>Scale model is created even
>Aprox 50 FRELIMO details who are basically regarded as retarded by ZANLA command inside
>Plans are devised
>A Plan A and a Plan B is created
>Plan A, capture VIPs with Selous Scouts posing as high-ranking FRELIMO officials
>Plan B, park somewhere and mow everyone down
>An armored column posing as a FRELIMO column will drive to the camp
>Once inside Mozambique, they'll just drive on the highways
>At this point, they drop the Pungwe Bridge to entirely cut off armor columns from the capital
>This gets approved
>Makeshift workshops, entirely manned by Selous Scouts with useful trades, disguise the vehicles
>Column consists of 9 Unimogs and 5 Ferret armoured cars mounted with nearly scraped Hispano 20mm's
>In total, 84 Selous Scouts
>Date of the operation is chosen- 9th of August, the day after a ZANLA holiday, when high-ranking members would be present
>Also it's a full moon, making their escape easier
>Operation kicks off.
>Column enters Mozambique 5 minutes after midnight, completely unmolested
>An advance party of extra troops is collected that had cut telephone lines earlier
>At one point, one the Ferrets wrecks by driving off a bridge and going into a gully
>Column moves on
>3 and a half hours later
>Column reaches the camp just as the post-festivities start up
>FRELIMO detail is literally entirely drunk, and still drinking, when the action starts
>There's supposed to be a decent standing FRELIMO presence at the gate
>There's six. Who are all unarmed. And immediately surrender, rather than alerting anyone.
>They drive inside
>People's attention are drawn to the new trucks coming in
>Vehicles go to pre-decided postions
>A Selous Scout at some point shouts through a megaphone that Rhodesia has been defeated and for all to gather around
>Most of the occupants of the camp are carrying wooden practice weapons; a request for addition firearms earlier in the month had been denied by ZANLA command
>At one point, a ZANLA realizes that there's whites in the vehicles (black Scouts were chosen to be the drivers etc.)
>Plan A is dropped
>Plan B starts
>The column commander, Rob Warracker, gives the order to open fire
>Absolute massacre commences
>A Selous mortar team opens fire into the camp as well
>Pre-decided literal firing lanes are put to use
>Next to no return fire, and no coordinated enemy fire whatsoever
>Constant fire for several minutes, tens of thousands of shots fired
>Later observers say that "a carpet of spent shell casings seemed to cover the entire scene"
>200 ZANLA who escaped the camp all drown while trying to swim across a river because: niggers can't swim
>Clean up
>Bridge gets destroyed
>Clean getaway
>Enemy camp entirely destroyed
>4 Rhodesians wounded - Aprox. 2,000 ZANLA killed
