There is however, the cutlass. A cutlass is a lot like a machete and is seen as the origination point for modern machetes. Cutlasses are less than 2ft, often only over 1ft in length and effective. A guy had one for cutting practice and managed to easily get through tough materials.

Halfswording isn't about the pommel though, it's about driving the point and or guard in deeper at a closer range. You can whack someone with the pommel sure, but it's a lot easier to shank em two-handed with the short end or pickaxe em in the eye with the guard. Just saying.

First of all, a baseball bat is like 2 and a half feet which is perfectly adequate, and also 'top heavy' is how hammers work. A baseball bat is a properly balanced weapon for its job- smashing. You wouldn't use a mallet with all the weight at the guard, only swords do this because they're for cutting and thrusting.

Parrying is the idea of getting the point away from your face. Riposte is stabbing them, at least with my limited face-to-face experience with my instruction. If you do not parry, your only other 2 options are voiding (getting out of the way) or being stabbed, one of which is viable while the other is not. In many sword systems, notably my experience with the german longsword and backsword, you do in fact parry in almost everything. In the first instance, you parry while attacking or parry and then attack in short order. In the second, you parry and then respond in a sort of 'chess duel' react and respond system typical of the later martial eras.

Saw lots of flyers near my place, and decided to give it a shot.

First couple of months as I've been told you only practice stick fighting, and only then you move on to training sabers and then to real. Sort of gives me a chance to back off if I will decide that I'm too poorfag for this shit.

Made myself a training saber akin to bokken from a polished broomstick and self-vulcanizing tape. I actually made two, but one of them was too thicc and heavy - a meter of 3cm thick hardwood + rubber on the handle, so I will throw it away / use it later / will put in my car instead of a baseball bat.

You start with wooden/synthetics where I'm at, then move on to steel sparring weapons which are basically blunts with protected tips. You generally never get to use a 'real' saber and I'd recommend against cutting your friends to ribbons.

Most channels aren't guides to physical fitness. It's just assumed that you'll gain that on your own as you commit yourself to training. These are technical guides done in non flip-o-rama format. Speed, Posture, fluidity, and timing is all you ever really need to focus on to grasp how to fight. I'm paraphrasing from the verse on the Wrath Stroke from Liechtenaur's Recital. If you're job is just to go into a fight with a longsword this is all you really need to train, though it is exclusive of most melee weapons a knight uses.

We were made to do the most basic stuff - stance, advancing, horizontal cuts, advancing and horizontal cuts, 5 strikes (left right legs and arms, and head), 5 defences, and lots of unrelated reaction / endurance crap. I find it very amusing and I will continue attending.

My main problem with fencing in general is when they do retarded shit to get a hit first and pretend it doesn't matter that they got stabbed back within a second. There is no reason to limit yourself to one way of exercising especially if you can't always find or attend a structured HEMA fencing class. Also you shouldn't say fencing when you mean Olympic foil, epee and saber. All three are great platforms when you start to learn the basics of single handed weapons like rapiers, sideswords, dussacke and military saber, but your mileage will always vary depending on how strict of a training regiment is set for the class and how much self discipline you can maintain during non class hours. I'ld say the biggest problem with a lot of HEMA fags is their physical fitness and not their technical grasp of sword play. Too many fucking burgers and coach potatoes and not enough killers from my observation. I give the older fencers a pass, but there is no excuse for someone in their 20s or 30s to be unable to compete at the collegiate level.

I would recommend this over both Olympic Fencing and HEMA because it does a much better job at conditioning the body. I wish I could just explain this all scientific like a kinesthesiologist, so training to be a biomechanical weapon wouldn't be so fucking difficult in the beginning or on your own, but you have to think about learning footwork through distance, angles, momentum, leverage, blah blah. If you're interested in self defense, don't take sport fencing. It's gamey, we fight to win at the higher levels and winning means first blood, regardless of how superficial. Yes it will train your body, but it is no substitute for self defense. If you want to do something competitive while still having self defense in mind, do Judo or something similar to it, as they fight at full force. Also relying on a sword for self defense is a slight bit ridiculous as you can't be expected to carry it around all the time. This isn't 1400s England.

I do want to reiterate: The mechanics for competitive play and war-like play are completely different. Both will train your body to react properly in most cases, so choose whichever one is more fun, but keep in mind that again when it comes to most competitive play it's gamey and first hit wins.
