The main problem I have with that was the time. When I was inna army and got my MREs we never had time to sit down and eat all of them. Get up before sunrise, do your guard shift, eat breakfast at the fire (canned bread and butter) as the sun rises, drink a coffee because you are tired as fuck, get ordered to do stupid shit all day until it's noon and you get 20 minutes to shove one of the main meals into your mouth. After that is't more stupid work until sunset when you get as much time as you want to eat the rest of your MRE, but guess what:
You have been awake for >16 hours, you have spent more than 15 hours doing something most likely very exhausting. You haven't had a non-interrupted night's sleep for the past three days, hell you have slept in a sleeping bag on the fucking ground for the past three days. Most of the day you carried around a heavy fucking backpack and your rig. Not to mention that you haven't had a fucking roof over your head all that time. Your joints hurt, your back hurts, your feet hurt, and all you want is some god damned sleep. You are dirty, you are moist to
At that point you just shove another warm meal into your mouth, wash it down with some instant drink, maybe eat some chocolate and crawl into your fucking tent again, hoping that they forget that you have to get up in two hours to do your guard shift in the middle of the fucking night, before returning to sit at the radio and drink some tea to warm your half-frozen ass, before crawling back into "bed" and getting a few more hours of sleep before being woken juuuust before sunrise again.
And don't forget: whoever snores gets the boot. Either you are kept awake by some snoring faggot, or you are the snoring faggot and get woken up every five fucking minutes.
This is why I like to go camping as a civvy. You have TIME. You can sit down on a stump, enjoy a coffee, make some good fucking breakfast and drink a nice cup of steaming tea at whatever pace you damn well please to, before heading out and doing your day's worth.
And when you feel hungry you come back to your camp, take out whatever ingredients you have, and start cooking a simple meal. It doesn't even have to taste good, just give me time to enjoy it. No matter what sweets or other tasty stuff you put into a sealed package, it's taste isn't going to matter if I don't have time to give a shit about flavour.
