A thread dedicated to the great diversity in cartridges from widely available to one off wild-cats and those passed over for time in the limelight.

Start off with arguably the most important cartridge in the bench rest shooting world as all of the PPC cartridges were originally made from .220 Russian brass. Developed by Louis Palmisano and Ferris Pindell the 6mm ppc is the most accurate cartridge their is, however it expanded into .30 PPC, .22 PPC, and .20 PPC. It's testament to the accuracy of these cartridges is that chamber reamers are all custom made with cases having their necks turn to suit the particular rifle.

The .308x 1.5" Barnes was America's own 7.62x39. simply cutting a .308 cartridge down to 1.5". However Barnes offered only the brass, not any loadings, for wildcatters to play around with. The benchrest series of cartridges came from it and they are considered the second most accurate cartridges next to the PPC series. The two most popular benchrest rounds are .30 and 6mm.

6mm benchrest is close to the 6mm PPC having more power but being slightly less accurate under 300 yards.

>95 grains close to 3000 fps

>105-108 grains to 2900 fps

It's not much but it at one point held the world record for a 10 shot group at 100 yards measuring only 4.2"

http://www.6mmbr.com/page/page/1309618.htm

It has spawned a number of wildcats that attempt to improve on it like the 6mm Dasher and 6XC each trying to squeeze a little more performance out of the case. The Dasher then took the 1000 yard title grouping only 2.68"

http://bulletin.accurateshooter.com/2014/04/best-10-shot-1000-yard-group-in-history-be-amazed/

The .30 br is probably the closest we'll get to an American 7.62x39 style of cartridge

>112 - 125 grains run at 3000 fps out of 24" barrels with 20" barrels dropping ~40fps

These may be higher then 7.62x39 but the lack of taper and sharp help it along and if it was more suited for an assault rifle a drop of 200 fps could probably be seen due to greater taper and more gradual shoulders and another 100 from a drop to a 16 inch barrel most likely. In the benchrest world this cartridge has high praises, long barrel life (5000-7000 rounds for match grade accuracy), and bigger holes yields easier scoring.

Every new 6.5mm cartridge out their is the equivalent of a dyed hair, tattoed up, body pierced 20 something year old tumblrite going "I'm not like the other girls" while sipping on an overpriced soy latte. I'll have to make an edit of that later

>.260 remington

>6.5x47 lapua

>6.5 creedmoor

All of these are ballistic duplicates of the venerable 6.5x55 Swede fitting into shorter actions.

>120 grains at 3000 fps

>140 grains at 2800 fps

They will all do this only varying 50 fps or so between rounds with the Swede having that +50 with heavy 140 grain bullets. Unless you're willing to get into 6.5-.284 Norma or .264 winchester magnum territory you won't see any improvement, even then those cartridges are absolute barrel burners. So in short just get a 6.5 Swede or .260 remington, it's fairly old and hold the morally righteous fact that you are above others because you don't buy into fads.

Quarter bores were the equivalent of 6.5 cartridges today way back when. Unfortunately it looks like they find no quarter in today's shooting world lacking the high BC bullet designs of the 6.5's, aside from one VLD hollow point from Berger.

The .250-3000 savage developed by Charles Newton hit 3000 fps using a 87 grain bullet in 1915. For it's time it was revolutionary but today it's antiquated without much support for it.

The .257 Roberts on the other hand is much more successful close to duplicating the performance of 6.5mm cartridges using bullets of 120 grains and lighter as no heavier .257 bullets exist. Based on the 7x57 mauser necked down it was once overbore when introduced but once slower powders became available as surplus after WWII it came into it's own before being passed over for the .243 winchester.

The .25-06 has a dedicated cult like following and people who use it really seem to love it. Loadings for it tend to go as follows.

>90/100 grains from 3,400 to 3,600 fps

>117/120 grains run from 2,800 to 3,200

The wide range in velocities gives choice as to duplicate .257 Roberts or go hotter. Being an overbore round this is a decent quality for handloaders. If better .257 bullet designs came out this could wipe the floor 6.5 cartridges being flatter shooting with great velocity retention.

I collect cartridges and feeding devices for guns I do not own, and there is nothing you can do to stop me.

It's less expensive than collecting entire guns, at least.

What's in everybody's reference library? I've already got Cartridges of the World and The Handloader's Manual of Cartridge Conversions, are there any other must have books on the topic I'm missing?

I've got a ton of old cartridge collector booklets from the 50's to I believe mid 70's. I also collect odd and obscure ammo when I can. I honestly wonder if the chassepot round will fire still.

>newfag for Gunshows.

I have been to a few shows, bought a few things. Interested in running a table and selling surplus ammo I got (Father passed away left lots of ammo). Any good price guides online? What are good prices to sell for stuff? I have more than enough for personal use (and for Innawoods happeings). Just looking to get out of wage slavery's credit card debt.

Walk the tables at a nearby show before your show to get an idea of the price. A lot of vendors in a region will go to multiple shows, so you'll likely see your competitions' prices.

You absolutely need to be aware that most of the people in local gunshows are regulars that are an ATF investigation away from requiring an FFL. They cannibalize newcomers of their stuff and put it on their own table for more, walk over and dissuade passersby from buying from you, and be general assholes about it. Don't think they're above stealing, either, I've seen that kind of shit.
