Are bolt action rifles obsolete?

41b5c9 No.549458

In hunting and sniping, of course not. They're still dependable for those purposes. For any sort of average military grunt, pretty much. You're better off giving them an assault rifle instead.

f7c040 No.549460

In what fucking context?

As a service rifle they were obsolete by the 1930's.

As a marksman's / precision rifle, they're arguably obsolescent, because there's nothing they can do that a properly built self loader can't.

As a sporting arm? Obviously not, but considering people still hunt with double rifles, falling blocks, and muzzle loaders, does it really matter?

A thread died for this low effort post.

Two words, OP: High pressure.

What other design would you turn to, to design a cartridge that could withstand 68,000 PSI?

no. why do you ask stupid questions?

>nothing they can do that a properly built self loader can't

nice, well researched conclusion considering everyone above a DRM role uses a chassis bolt action these days. more repeatable bolt lockup, more sturdy action, with the user having control over recoil and reloading for followthrough and observation. it's better for long and extreme range, SASS fill a different role.

Falling-block?

>Falling block

It would work but the lock up would not be as consistent and imagine trying to make it feed from box magazines

2c0870 No.549535

No the AWM is bolt action and if counterstrike has taught me anything its that you will die =if a bullet from the AWM hits your toe.

26f44e No.549537

>>549531

Falling block is when you need to make a cartridge perform to a retarded level or overloading.

Actually, the AWP kills at any part of the body other than the legs. Chest, arms and head are all one hit kills, no matter if you have armor or not.

Bumping this thread with three ideally discussion provoking questions: what is the sexiest bolt action, what is the most effective bolt action for long range, and what is the bolt action you would like to use in a SHTF scenario?

I wouldn't say they're obsolete, but bolt action certainly needs to give up on competing with semi auto. Semi auto is good for what it's good at. Bolt action should have transitioned away from military usage (at least general infantry usage) back in like the 40s, but I think if bolt action raifus focused more on recoil dampening and increasing the load, they could gain back their former glory as a more powerful weapon as compared to semi auto. All that being said, I'm a romantic. I love bolt action rifles, and while I realize now days that their only advantage is like a magnum in a SHTF scenario where reliability over the long term is more important, I also recognize that they are old men in the presence of new firearms, and have grown weak when all the new gadgets can accomplish (or heavily imitate) their strengths without any of their weaknesses.

To whomever drew that; you need to practice more on your proportions and perspective. Her left foot is smaller than her right, her neck could be shortened a hair, and I can't tell what her left hand is doing I'm assuming resting her thumb in her belt, but it would look more natural if it was resting on her saber. No hate, just some criticism on my part.

If you ever get a chance at one do it. They're alright bush guns, they do have the drawbacks like Steyr's and Ross's not liking any form of dirt.

Specific rifles, or styles of action?

You'd be hard pressed to find a modern bolt action rifle that isn't largely patterned after the Mauser action.
