Started life without STANAG compatibility BECAUSE THE STANAG DIDN'T EXIST AT THAT TIME.
NATO standard at that time was 7.62 NATO in 20x rounds.
The only country using 5.56 (the US) was using 55gr ammo in 20 rounds mags, which is what the french went with (but with 25 rnds mags. It's not entirely impossible old US 20rnds mags do work with a FAMAS, the mag release locks the back of the mags and old US mags have a slit there, I honestly don't know). Then the US decided to adopt belgian ammunition as the NATO standard for largely bullshit reason (the main one being 55gr is TOO DEADLY, look it up).
Upon which the french just went "this is retarded" and kept 55gr.
Less drop, less recoil in burst, more fragmentation…
Only because people stopped making decent 55gr was the switched made.
It's quite easy to change from lefty to righty, no tool are required (it's just that it took engineers 50 years to understand that "ambidextrous" to soldiers meant being able to shoot with both arms to clear corners not on your dominant one, not making them easier to use for lefties).
The only thing really shitty about it is the stupid placement of fire selector (especially since it was intended to be used in bursts and in this day and age no one does that).
