They fired everyone in the industry that knew anything about firearms and instead put a bunch of random engineers in the room to design it. Compound that with refusing technical assistance from Sterling in an effort to save face and pretend the gun wasn't just a very badly engineered AR-180 and it's a pointed disaster.

Do you mean the L86 specifically? Or the L85A1 family in general? Other people have gone over the shitshow that lead to the l85A1 already, but if you want to know the specific problems with the L86 it was basically a Marksmans rife that the infantry was told to use as an LMG. When the MOD realised that you couldn't expect people to treat a long barrelled rifle with a 30 round mag as a machine gun they scrapped it and are in the process of replacing it with the L129A1 (an actual marksmans rifle in 7.62x51) and the Minimi (an actual machine gun).
