There's no discharge in the war!

so for all intents and purposes, you get given one (1) tank of your choice designed and/or manufactured before 1945.

You are free to modify it with modern components but you cannot change major parts (superstructure, turret rung, suspension setup). You can change the turret only if you need to do so but do remember the strain of new guns is fuckhuge compared to WW2 era ones. You can also slap more modern things on it (eg atgms and ERA). Discuss how you'd use your tank in an active war zone.

For example:

I'll take an M22 locust, and switch out the gun for a Bushmaster Mk44. MILAN ATGM on the top of the turret, ERA on the front of the hull. basic electronics (ir detection, modern sight (IR, Heat and telescopic with

rangefinder). The engine would be swapped for a 6.0 LS V8, suspension reinforced to deal with the added weight.

As for using it, urban terrain is gonna be my play ground. Get close and personal with MBTs and slap them in the ass using the bushmaster. Small size and high speed means getting a hit is harder than it looks and being able to hide in buidings means other tanks passing by might just not see you.

Take an M4 Sherman

Stick either a 60mm HVMS, Cockerill 90mm, or F1 105mm on it since it can actually accept all of those without significant alterations and in some cases it puts less strain on the vehicle

Slab some ERA or CAGE on it

Update it with some modern electronics i.e. IR, new optics and maybe an APS

Fix it up with a new engine

Bang you've got a decent Tank for Kebab Removal. Basically what I'd wager most suggestions are going to boil down to.

Don't forget Wet storage if it isn't included.

I wonder if it's possible to rig an autoloader to it by removing the gunners seat and wiring it to the machine gunners seat?

Is wet storage important or are you using a tank wrong if you can get catastrophic killed like the Ruskies did in Chechnya 1?

Any WWII-era tank armor is going to be worthless against modern anti-tank weapons. Thus, any armor beyond 'that necessary to protect against small arms' is going to be useless.

I choose the M-18 Hellcat.

>fastest thing on treads during the war

>still pretty fast even when compared to modern AFVs

>radial engine will run on regular gas

Modifications

>obligatory ERA or slat armor

>obligatory modern optics, radio, et al

>replace the main gun with a low velocity gun-mortar that can also launch wire-guided missiles

c389df No.537772

>>537761

Wet stowage is always useful.

As for the Russians in Chechnya? There was rumours that the crews had pawned off their ERA plus anyone that sends Tanks into an urban environment where there are fucktons of RPG's and ATGM's gets what they deserve.

>>537766

Know there was a Hellcat prototype that mounted a 105mm Howitzer on it? Also I'd think the Hellcat might actually be a bit too lightly armoured considering I think there are parts of it that can be penned easily by 7.62 and maybe even some 5.56 rounds. I wouldn't take my word on it though, I just remember hearing something like an M113 was better protected than it

>>537772

.50 cals will definitely fuck up an M18 frontally in some parts, and the parts that will be fucked up by .50 will be fucked up by WW2 era 30-06 AP rounds so yeah.

That was the reason I chose an M22, because the armor all around can survive at least .50 cal AP. A kpvt would fuck it up completely tho

Probably the real question is why not the M24 Chaffee though? Wouldn't it be a better choice? A lot more you could do with the chassis.

58652e No.538337

>>537935

I have a personnal preference for the M22, and you can actually enter buildings with it without too much trouble (even those buildings that arent made for vehicles to get in, eg houses). Plus, the Chaffee was chosed over the M22 because of the better armor and gun, both of which are definitely not enough now anyway (the 75 might be able to be used as an anti-infantry gun tho).

>>537935

Does the M24 really count if it's still in active service in Taiwan and I think the Netherlands? Though I do agree its a much more sound choice than the locust because of the three man turret and more generous turret ring. I would however modernize the Chaffee with that hyper velocity 75mm gun and crazy fire control system used on the HSTVP along with a single, more powerful possibly supercharged petrol engine in place of the original tandem engines hooked up to one transmission. After that I suppose you could put on some modern air bursting smoke projectors and ERA for defense. Possibly cut out the radio operator/hull gunner for more fuel and ammo because modern stabilizers make him obsolete. or leave him in because the HSTVP fire control system would make him and everyone else in the vehicle a backup gunner anyway

I know everything about your post is wrong, but this part pisses me off the most.

Give me the Chaffee with a modernized engine, replace 75mm with the 40mm bofors, remove bow MG to stow the extra ammo, ERA plates around the ammo stowage, give slats for basic rpg protection everywhere else, add a laser range finder (and if there'd be room decent FCS) for obvious reasons.

I guess it'd pretty much translate into a really expensive, less useful BMP-2K now that I think about it. Bah fuck the whole thing, I'd just rip the turret off and use it as a quick troop transport.

While I'll use the Hellcat for my build, any resonably fast vehicle will do.

>take Hellcat

>rip the turret out

>mount a Vasilek

>hook up a small trailer to carry extra ammo

>shoot (pomfpomfpomfpomf)

>scoot

Anything extra would just be smoke screen launchers, or maybe one of those fancy missile launch detectors. Maybe stow an ATGM somewhere for if a tank wanders into sight.

>>537766

>still pretty fast even when compared to modern AFVs

<It was the fastest American tracked armored vehicle until the turboshaft-powered M1 Abrams main battle tank appeared decades later. Even then, most sources list the M1 Abrams with a standard operating speed of only 45 mph (governed speed; maximum possible speed is much higher), leaving the Hellcat with a superior paved-road top operating speed.

The Hellcat is sanic fast.

Probably a comet with an L7 105mm gun instead of the 77mm gun, some chobham 2 armour plates as well as bazooka plates and standoff armour.

Obviously with modern IR optics and all that good shit too. Maybe a TOW missile launcher or something mounted on top, I'm a brainlet when it comes to missiles.

Call me lazy but there's really no need to try to fit 70+ year old tanks which are outdated and severely lacking in both offense and defense in modern warfare when any tankette/light tank from that era could be easily converted into a reconnaissance tank like the German Weasel.

In my case, take any tankette from the era, replace the engine with hybrid motors, or just make it run on an electric motor, and slap on a TOW, 20mm Auto-Cannon, or any other modern weapon systems. The Germans slapped on Panzerschreks on to captured Universal Carriers; the sky is the limit for what kind of roles they can take.

Sorry for the shitty last picture

M24 is a much better chassis though as it allows you to do more with it over the M22. Sometimes it's really not all about firepower or armour but what the actual chassis itself.
