Newsweek article, backed up:

http://archive.is/l1tY1

Did they even change caliber? How does changing from a beretta to a sigsauer make it "much more lethal" ? That's practically video game logic…turn the dial to 200m and the bullets exit the barrel that much faster because they know you're shooting at really far targets.

Also, please tell me that guy isn't about to shoot that pistol barely-holding it like that. He's just looking at the sights after shooting it to compare his sight window to the hole in the paper, or something?

Lastly, what's 'really dated' (per the article) about the M9 pistol? I mean, have human hands changed that much that we need new ergonomics, or was the old purchase just pork-barrel decision making when what was needed was to rechamber the 1911 into 10mm, or .357sig, or something?

Please /k/, help me understand why I'm reading this article….I mean, aside from the fact I bother looking at the screen after I log out of my yahoo email….or the fact I have a yahoo email account still.

>The M9 has become "pretty dated technology," said Lieutenant Colonel Steven Power, who oversees part of the weapon upgrade. "The specific performance improvements from [the M17 and M18] over the M9 include better accuracy, tighter dispersion, and better ergonomics, which combined result in a far more lethal pistol."

Handguns aren't used that often, this was mostly a logistics improvement.

The more I watch MAC on youtube, the more I realize that a lot of the stupid fuck decisions made regarding small arms is done because the people we pay to shoot for a living aren't nearly as proficient in shooting as the people who shoot for fun.

The 10mm became the .40 because people had trouble qualifying on the 10mm. .45 was swapped for 9mm because the .45 was heavy and hard to shoot. There are constant examples of weapon strengths being sacrificed to dispose of a few 'weaknesses', when those weaknesses could also be disposed of by training and practice.

Personally, I'm still baffled by this pistol change. We went from one 9mm pistol to another 9mm pistol. Far as I know, there wasn't anything especially wrong with one we had, it maybe could've done with an update, but that's it. Instead, let's completely change the gun we use for reasons. It seems very much like throwing the baby out with the bathwater.

>We went from one 9mm pistol to another 9mm pistol.

The Beretta 92 is trash. I don't know who got the idea that it should be a US military sidearm.

875f7c No.532906

The quote explains itself.

This is dubious to say the least, but that's the explanation. Newsweek didn't pull the quote out of its ass.

Well, okay but what I'm saying is the whole story behind Newsweek came straight out of somebody's ass

Thank you, Strelok. I'm glad I'm not the only one.

875f7c No.532914

>>532910

Oh yeah, that guy's full of shit. Dated technology? It's a semi-automatic, magazine fed pistol. This is century-old technology. Improved ergonomics and slightly better groupings doesn't mean dick, especially for people who will likely never use it in combat. I don't think it's a bad idea to pick a successor in the same cartridge and gradually phase it out over the years, but to act like this is a major upgrade in combat effectiveness is ridiculous.

b6e331 No.532917

>>532903

No one wanted to order more 1911's and the US wanted free military bases in Italy.

>>532914

From a manufacturing standpoint I'm sure it is dated. You can probably produce three or four P320's or Glocks for the same price and in the same amount of time it takes to make one Beretta. Not that it will get translated to actual cost savings because of the usual bullshit inherent in government contracts.

It's a logistics thing. It allows you to field 9m among your grunts while also throwing a bone to the guys who want .45s or whatever meme round is in favor at the time and all you need to accommodate everyone is to swap out a couple of parts.

It's also slightly less complicated for the average grunt to handle. Reference >>532897 for why that matters.

This was not a performance upgrade and it wasn't really sought as one. Anybody who says so doesn't know what they're talking about. It's mainly a logistics improvement.

Don't forget it also replaces the M11, which was used for MPs and officers with tiny hands.

The m9 also weighs so much you're butter off taking extra mags of ammo for your primary. M17 with an empty mag is 5-9 ounces lighter than an M9 without a mag.

957763 No.532953

>>532914

It's an all metal gun adopted when the Glock was a thing. Polymer pistols exploded during the M9's time in service and the weight savings are a huge thing in military service. It's also black and military wants to make as many things FDE as possible.

By average grunts i'm sure you mean the CO, pilots and MPs who are all going on deployment with an infantry battalion and may be expected to go on patrol. Every other grunt or POG that leaves the FOB is only expected to be proficient with an m16 variant.

sorry bud, 10mm is simply harder to shoot even with training. .45 kicks way more than 9mm. 9mm is definitely a pussy gun though.

Do you want to be a pussy or do you want to shoot a real gun? Men go with .40 because .45 is low energy garbage and 10mm is fudd meme candy.

Keep your 'best caliber' shit to yourself. I shoot .38 special and .357 magnum. That's how fucking little I care about 'muh caliber'. If it's a proven killer, it's a valid choice and even a .380 pocket pistol will drop someone at close range.

10mm gave exactly what people requested of it, then they hamstrung the design for ease of use. You can't have everything. They wanted unrealistic penetration for the recoil and weight they were willing to put up with. .40 is a compromise round with no real objective. 10mm had a set objective and met it, being a much more powerful and penetrating round then the 9mm. Modern 9mm meets it's objective of being a fair performer in a lighter, easier to shoot package. .40 is just…we want more then 9mm, but we aren't willing to make the gun harder to shoot.

It's like saying, 'We want this tank to be invincible, but put a big ass gun on it, make it super fucking fast and gas efficient as hell'. You can't have everything. Pick an objective and make a round for that objective. 10mm was that. .40 is not.

Is that so? Well, that's…disturbing. Maybe someone high up in the chain decided they hate external hammers, then. Or somebody's in bed with Sig. Strange, though - swapping that shit around was one of the gun's most well-advertised features. I recall reading that the requirements for the contract specified that it be able to do just that.

This guy gets it. No matter what caliber you pick, It's still a small lead bearing that travels near, at, or over 1000 feet per second. They all have the potential to kill.
