Blowback has a (Usually) fixed barrel and an unlocked breech. Spring tension is the only thing keeping the action from opening too fast.
Recoil operation means the barrel stays locked with the bolt for a short period of time until the pressure inside the chamber drops to a safe level at which point the mechanical lock disengages. Short recoil means the barrel stays locked for less than the full length of the cartridge, long recoil means they stay locked for the entire length of travel.
