Actually, there is one pro I missed there and that I think is the main reason they appeared in that abortion of a game series. They can look kinda cool.

It's a pretty snug fit if you get the right size so at worst your head would tip forward and whatever hit you would skid off. Otherwise it depends on how strong your neck is.

A bullet will only have as much force as the opposite force it produced when fired, which is the recoil. Sure the gun will soften it some, but the helmet will weigh close to the same in many cases.

To simplify, you shoot a 8mm mauser round out of a 5lb rifle into a guy's head who is wearing a 5lb helmet and the force on the guys head is the same as the recoil from the gun. Not comfortable but not enough to break someones neck, and it beats being shot in the head.

Well yes, it was more for the physics of it, not an actual example. Replace the helmet with a lvl 4 rifle plate for a more realistic example.
