There is also records of an escaping POW being hit with 4 rounds of .30 carbine and not going down, so any practical pistol calibre has a chance of this happening without a central nervous system hit.

Yes. There was some footage I hope another anon could provide of a gun shop owner who was being robbed by two gunman, one could be seen with two pistols. The shop keep kept his hands low and slowly moved to get his 1911 while the robbers were distracted by another employee, so the shop keep drew while he guy with two pistols was distracted and shot once or twice into his chest. It was hard to tell which incapacitated him first, but the second one clearly kills and his whole body goes stiff and falls back. The other robber fled while the shop keep fired a few rounds in his direction.

It wouldn't matter much. Basically all semiauto handgun rounds act the same in flesh. They all just poke holes, expanding ammo or not. The idea of hydro-static shock and enlarged wound paths stem from a misunderstanding of what ballistic gel is. That is it isn't a flesh analog but a calibrated uniform medium.

At the end of the day, no handgun is good at stopping humans fast. Once you get to an energy that allows full perforation of a human you're not going to see much benefit. The largest difference between handgun rounds are going to be secondary things like the number of rounds you can fit in a given mag size and their ability to penetrate hard barriers.

You need to be dumping about 1500J energy before you get damage extending beyond bullet diameter.

That doesnt mean 1500J bullet, it means 1500J inside target. If a 1500J bullet entered a body at the muzzle, and stopped inside the body (didnt go through) that would be 100% delivery. If a 1500J bullet went through a body and retained 1000J on the other end, only 33% delivery.

Even then you need at least rudimentary targeting, blowing off a hand wont always stop a guy.

How is that surprising? Hand guns are side arms and side arms throughout history have always been weaker and worse than main weapons.

For example the longtime side arm before hand guns were knifes and daggers. They have a terrible reach compared to real meele weapons and if you are not capable of hitting a vital point, you are in for a long and brutal brawl until the other guy bleeds to death from your cuts.

The advantage of the hand gun over the knife/dagger is that you can hit the other guy in vital parts or bleed him dry from outside the reach of his body, otherwise its equally effective.
